Prompt Word: Break
Elphaba Thropp was tough. She was just one of those people that could withstand anything. That was her: the reliable one, the sturdy one, the strong one. In moments of pure chaos, like the time the lights went off at Shiz, even prissy girls like ShenShen and Pfanni clung to her for guidance and control.
Then Fiyero died.
She tried to save him. Every single magical cell in her body tried. But it failed. Tragically. She knew it. She just did. She felt it. His heart was not beating, his muscles not moving, and his brain not thinking. He was missing. There was a huge chunk of her heart that was missing.
When she realized this, she screamed. She screamed until her throat was raw and her lungs exhausted. She scrambled around the room at Kiamo Ko, ripping at things, tearing at things. Any small object she could hold, she threw. She flung herself against the wall, but she didn't feel it. Her body had taken to a complete numbness. There was no feeling to it: no feeling when she banged her head against the bookcase, no feeling when she pulled thick locks of her hair out, no feeling when she chewed at her wrist in an attempt to recognize something other than grief and sorrow.
Stumbling around, she grabbed a random music box and tossed it. Her mind snapped in realization when a weak little tune came on.
It was her and Fiyero's song.
That was the music box he gave her.
She quickly huddled around the shattered thing, trying to somehow put it back together. But it was no use, even she knew it. So, she scooped up as much as she could and cradled it as if it were a small child, mumbling apologies.
She felt a sudden presence. She looked up at her crystal ball and saw a pair of ruby slippers walking down a yellow road. She gently sat her broken box down and hunched over the orb. Her hands writhed in anger. If it weren't for that brat, Nessa would be dead...Fiyero wouldn't be...
That was it. She was going to get those shoes, no matter what it took.
