Nail Polish and Kisses

(Dominique and Roxanne are painting each other's nails, and somehow this leads to Dominique's first kiss.)

Roxanne is not the artsy one out of her and Dominique, but she has a lot more experience with the nail polish medium. So at their sleepover, she goes first in the mutual nail painting, carefully—as carefully as she ever does anything—applying the soft orange polish to Dominique's nails.

"I don't know why you don't wear more makeup, Minnie," she chatters while she paints. "It would look great on you."

Dominique shrugs. "I'm not into that kind of art."

"Well, you should let me do your makeup more often, then," says Roxanne.

"In between all of your Quidditch stuff," Dominique says, "I don't know how you find the motivation for makeup, too." She tries to let Roxanne take over the conversation, and it works.

"Yeah," Roxanne starts to babble, "well I've got to look fabulous on my player posters, don't I?"

She talks more about Quidditch aspirations, and while Dominique couldn't care less about Quidditch, she likes hearing Roxanne talk about it. She's passionate, and it makes her happy. Which makes Dominique happy.

"Well, I think your nails are done," Roxanne says at a point later. "And we got the instant drying kind, so you can do mine. I took off the old polish just for you."

"Well, thanks," Dominique says wryly, while she picks up the bright red bottle Roxanne picked out. She starts on Roxanne's nails, and it's her turn to talk, so she uses it for questions. "Why are you so into makeup? You look beautiful without it, anyway."

With her free hand, Roxanne gives her cousin a little shove, uncharacteristically not enough to disturb the nail painting. "Because," she answers simply.

"Is it for 'the girl hunt'?" Dominique asks. It's been another one of their favorite topics ever since they found out they both like girls. Roxanne seems to be hunting for a date all over the place, but Dominique likes one girl in particular.

"Well, apparently it isn't necessary," says Roxanne.

Dominique's heart gives a hopeful flutter. "Oh?" she asks.

"Well," Roxanne says in an odd tone, "the girl I'm after agrees with you."

Agrees with. Not is, thinks Dominique. "Hmm," is all she offers.

Roxanne looks up at her. "You don't know what I'm saying, do you?" she asks.

"What do you mean?"

"About the girl I like."

"What about her?"

"It's you."

Dominique blinks. "Oh." Internally she's doing cartwheels and squealing, but on the outside she has a blank stare. Then she smiles slowly. "Well, I'm glad."

Roxanne laughs. "You're so formal." She grabs a handful of Dominique's hair and pulls her into a kiss. It's very Roxanne, searing and deep and Dominique has no idea what to do.

Roxanne pulls back, a little breathless. Dominique continues to stare.

"Was that your first kiss?" Roxanne asks coyly.

Dominique nods. But Roxanne knew that.

"And it wasn't too weird? Kissing your cousin?" Roxanne asks.

"Well, you kissed me," she answers. "But… no."

"I'm glad," Roxanne echoes, and smiles. "So finish painting my nails."

Dominique laughs, and starts on the task.

Roxanne leans back, and says, "You know, I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship."
