Disclaimer: I don't own 'em. I wish I owned Jess, but, alas, I don't.
Rory sat on the couch eating day old pizza and Twinkies with Lorelai waiting for Dean to call and make plans for the night. " Rory what do you think about green/blue bridesmaid gowns for Sookie's wedding?"
"That sounds fine to me, Rory said." Suddenly the phone rang and Rory went to her room to get the phone. Surprisingly the voice on the other end of the line was not Dean's, it was Tristin's. "Um hi Tristin," Rory said in an unsure kind of voice. "Why are you calling me, is something wrong?"
"No. Nothing is wrong I just felt like calling someone who wouldn't answer me in a sergeant call."
"O, so how is military school? I bet it is tough."
"It's ok, if you can take people beating down on you like that. Any way how is Dean? Are you two still together, Tristin asked hoping she would say no?
"Yeah we are still together. He's fine."
"Um Rory I was wondering if you would like to go out to dinner with me the day after tomorrow? I'm going to be flying in for my mother's birthday so I would be in town. We could catch up on Paris and all the other Chilton horrors.
Rory noticed he said it all in one breath like he would die if he didn't get it out that very second. She thought about it a minute and decided that one dinner with Tristin wouldn't hurt. She just couldn't tell Dean; after all we are talking about Dean here, the great overeactor.
" Um Rory you still there? Is it ok can you come?"
" O, yeah that sounds good."
" Great I'll pick you up at 7:25, ok with you?"
"Yeah, great see you then," Rory said in a kind of queasy unsure voice. Bye.
Now that was by far the weirdest phone call. Even weirder then the time Kirk called and asked if we would like to buy a copy of "a film by kirk."
" Hey Rory was that Dean are you going somewhere later."
"O, no it was a wrong number," Rory said…
***
" Hey ready to go?"
" Just let me get my jacket, Rory told Tristin."
" Great I'll wait in the car."
"OK, Rory yelled nervously."
A couple of hours later Rory sat on a bench with Tristin, Rory couldn't help but notice how good-looking he was. 'I guess Military school did him good.' They sat there after eating a humongous dinner eating ice cream. As usual Rory was never full until it was to late.
Very unexpectedly someone ran up to them quickly and dropped a book in Rory's lap. She tried to get a glance at him but she couldn't tell whom it was. Tristin asked Rory if she knew him but she didn't know. Tristin was about to take the book to get rid of it in case but Rory noticed it was her copy of The Portable Dorothy Parker. She could only remember lending the book to Lane but she had returned it months ago. Rory knew who it was, who else would it be! He's back, Jess was back. She gently flipped through the book and on the last page Jess had wrote: Rory thanks for letting me take the book don't worry I'll get your copy of Emma back to you I think I might just read it, for you that is.
Love Jess
She didn't know how to react. Did Jess sign his name LOVE JESS? Did he like her? Did she like him! Even though she was with Tristin and everything seemed great buzzers kept going off in her head and every sign wasn't pointing to Dean, or Tristin, it was pointing to JESS! Rory quickly sped off leaving Tristin behind not knowing what had happened…
