Chloe Sullivan stood in the rain. She felt so bad for Whitney Fordman. Her Mother had left her, it wasn't like she had died. But Whitney's Father, whom he was very close to, had just passed away. So here they all were, at his funeral.
She looked up and saw Clark Kent standing in the rain as well, sans umbrella, unlike herself. Then she saw him share a look with Whitney's girlfriend, Lana Lang. It turned her stomach, but Lana left with Whitney.
Clark began walking away, but Chloe was quick to catch up with him. "Hey, do you wanna take a walk?" He smiled and said, "It's raining." Chloe smiled too and said, "So? Let's just walk and talk. Even in the rain."
So that's what they began doing. Chloe tried putting the umbrella over both of their heads, but Clark was too tall. So she took it down and carried it, deciding to get just as wet as Clark was by now.
"Things happen so fast...", Clark said. "I mean, one day, it looks like Mr. Fordman is gonna be okay. And then the next...he's gone." Chloe nodded in agreement. It was true. Things did happen that quickly.
"It just made me realize how important life is, ya' know? It's a precious gift that we're given." Clark nodded and smiled at her, loving how eloquently Chloe could always manage to put certain things.
"So how are you Chlo? I mean, after everything that happened..." Chloe sighed. She had been quite shaken up after everything that had happened with Justin, and him trying to kill her. She had had real feelings for him.
It was nice to just have feelings for someone who wasn't Clark. After all, she had been in love with him since the first day she met him. Justin was special. Which is why the chain of events shook her to her core.
"I'm pretty sure everything will heal. All except for my bruised ego, of course." They shared a smile and then Clark shook his head. "You shouldn't feel stupid, Chlo. We all make mistakes, sometimes trust people we shouldn't."
They shared a look and Chloe just nodded. "You know", Clark said, switching topics. "I don't know if I could handle being in Whitney's position. Losing my Dad like that. I don't think I could handle it."
Chloe understood that completely. Ever since her Mother had left them, her Dad was the only parent she had. He was the only person in her life that she knew wasn't going anywhere. She hoped that never changed.
"Yeah, you and your Dad are pretty close. I bet you'd be destroyed." Clark nodded. "I know I would be.", Chloe continued. "I mean, losing the only guy in my life..." She looked up to see Clark acting offended.
"And what am I, chopped liver?" Chloe smiled. "Well of course there's you, Clark. And you'd better not ever leave me either. I honestly don't know what I would do without you..." She didn't want to think about it.
Clark smiled. "I would never leave you Chloe. That's something you'll never have to worry about. Not in this lifetime anyway." Chloe sighed a breath of relief and nodded, hoping that Clark was right.
Then he took her by surprise by taking her hand in his and squeezing it. Chloe squeezed it back and they shared a smile. Both knew that deep down, they didn't want to be anywhere else but right here.
She looked up toward the sky and then back at Clark. "Ya' know, I love the rain. It's so peaceful, so beautiful, so..." Clark supplied, "Wet?" They shared a smile and a laugh. "Great word Kent, great word."
Clark laughed and then looked at her. The rain had matted her hair to her head and caused her makeup to run a little. But in Clark's opinion, he had never seen his best friend look more beautiful than she did right now.
"You wanna come over to the Kent farm, have a nice cup of cocoa?" Chloe grinned and said, "I thought you'd never ask." They shared a smile and then continued walking to her car, still holding hands.
