Dawson Leery walked into his house, with a smile on his face. Things in his life were definitely on the up and up, at least for now. His Mother would be home with his new baby sister in a few days, and tonight, Mitch was staying at the hospital, just in case.
Then a thought occurred to him. A gift he had spotted that his Mother had gotten at her shower and he wanted to question Joey about it. So he picked up the phone. "Jo, hey, it's me. Yeah, can you come over here?"
"Who was that?", Bess Potter asked her little sister. Joey Potter shook her head, putting her jacket on. "Dawson, he wants me to come over. I'll be home later." Bessie just nodded and smiled after her.
"Yeah, it's fine. Yup. Okay. You sure? Sure Dad. Alright. Tell Mom I love her. And Lilly. Okay. Love you too. Bye." He hung up and smiled. Then he turned around and saw that Joey was standing in his doorway.
"Hey, been waitin' long?" She shook her head, smiling a little. "No, just eavesdropping." They shared a smile. "Just wanted to check." Joey nodded knowingly, still not being able to believe that Dawson was a big brother now.
"So what's up?", She asked. "How come you asked me to come over?" Dawson smiled. "Can't a friend just invite a friend over?" Joey folded her arms across her chest and Dawson laughed, shaking his head.
"You know me too well, Jo. I do have an angle." Joey nodded, having known that already. She watched him go to his dresser and take something off of it. She immediately recognized it as the necklace that she had given to Gale earlier that day.
"My Mom said you gave this to her for Lilly." Joey nodded. "Yeah, I thought she'd like to have something of her big brother's." Dawson smiled and shook his head, pointing to the stuffed shark on the end of his bed.
"That's what I'm givin' Lilly, breakin' her in early." Joey couldn't help but laugh. "I gave this necklace to you Jo. I wanted you to have it." Joey looked up and then nodded in response. She did know that.
"I gave it to you as a symbol of my love and our friendship, and the bond we share. That hasn't changed Jo." Joey just smiled. Then he added, "It kinda hurt me when you gave it away." Joey sighed, not wanting that to have been the case at all. That was her last intention.
"Dawson, the last thing I wanted to do was hurt you. But I thought that after everything that's happened between us, you wouldn't really want me to have the necklace anymore." It was sad, but true, that's what she had thought.
"I guess I just wanted your sister to know that kind of love, like the kind we share. Ya' know?" Dawson nodded, understanding her point. Then Joey shook her head. "But I was wrong to give it away. Can I have it back?"
Dawson grinned and put it in her hand. "Absolutely." Joey looked up and into his eyes. "I'll keep it, always. I mean, it meant a lot to me when you gave it to me and it still does." Dawson smiled and nodded.
"Good, I'm glad. That's why I gave it to you in the first place, so you'd never forget how much you mean to me." She smiled and said, "I won't." Then Joey took the necklace and put it on, as if to prove a point.
Dawson laughed. "You don't have to wear it." Joey smiled and said, "Shut up, I want to." Dawson smiled too. "Wanna watch "ET"?" Joey rolled her eyes, but nodded. "Sure." She got settled on her normal spot on the bed.
"How do I be a good brother?" Joey looked at him as he sat down next to her. "Just be yourself.", She said earnestly, smiling. Dawson smiled too and they turned their attention to the screen as the opening credits began to roll.
