Conrad Linneman seemed like a normal kid, but he wasn't. Without letting anyone know, he wasn't fond of his life. For as long as Conrad could remember, he's had an abusive father and an absent mother. His mother, Rose, left when he was just a baby, so he has no memory of her. Conrad also didn't have any siblings, so for as long as he could remember, it was just him and his father.

Conrad's father, Paul Linneman, was a man with many conflicting issues. Every time he got angry or upset, he took it out on his son. Conrad was also abused when he did things incorrectly; like the one time when he was asked to make Paul coffee. But as a 6 year old Conrad was pouring the hot water; he accidentally spilled, which earned him a cut on his arm.

Conrad had nowhere else to go and no one to turn to for help. He was angry at his father for abusing him for years, he was angry at his mother for leaving him with Paul and he was angry at the world for making his life so miserable.

One late afternoon, when Conrad was 12, an argument with his father left him with a couple bruises on his body and it left him running. Running to where he always went to after something like this happened. Many years ago, when Conrad was in a similar situation, he had come to a small section of the town's river that no one ever visited. It was empty and peaceful and located almost just outside the city.

Due to the fact that Conrad was in a confined area, he hadn't gotten the notice that there was a chemical radiation leak in the very same river he was at. Unfortunately, no one knew about Conrad's hiding place, so no one had any idea that he was there. Paul simply didn't care where his son was at the time of the notice.

Conrad stuck his bruised hands in the water – like he did many times before – to help with his injuries. He saw an unfamiliar translucent substance travelling with the water flow, but with the pain in his body, he easily dismissed it as a fish. He couldn't care less at that moment. Unfortunately for him, the chemicals made contact with his skin and wounds and had to bite down on his lip to prevent himself from crying out in pain. But alas, the pain exceeded and Conrad was forced to cry out in pain.

Hours later, Conrad discovered his newfound abilities. At first, he was astounded by them, but as soon as he got his new powers under control, he started thinking of his father and felt an urge for revenge.

He confronted Paul and showed off his newfound powers. Paul was shocked and stunned while Conrad suddenly felt the pain his father had brought him all these years surge in his body all at once. But as Conrad was about to end Paul's life… he just couldn't do it. With humiliation and anger directed towards himself, Conrad ran. He ran as far and as fast as he could go, never looking back.

Conrad is now 15 years old and living in Gotham City. He undertook the name, Slater, and because he felt like he needed revenge on the world, he became a villain. Within Gotham City, he met a hero named Lucki and the two are constantly caught up in their one-on-one battles. Although Slater would never admit it, he sometimes looks at Lucki as the brother he never had. But through it all, Slater knew that gaining his powers all those years ago gave him the opportunity to escape his cruel father.
