ALOHA, KAINA By Moonhawk64

Author's Note: I know I should be writing other stories I have in progress for other shows, but this just wouldn't leave me alone. Since it looks like The Powers That Be aren't going to go into it, I figured I would. Because, really, no drug cartel worthy of the name is going to just stand by and let someone steal anything from them. Therefore, this is the Epilogue-that-should-have-been for Episode 1.18.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything that makes money. More's the pity.

Danny was doing paperwork when his spidey sense suddenly started tingling. He looked up to see Steve standing in the doorway, an expression of sadness on his face, and compassion in his eyes. He knew instantly what it meant.

"Who?" Danny's voice broke even over that short word, and he took a deep breath, squaring his shoulders for the emotional blow he knew he was about to receive.

"Matt." Steve told him quietly. "Found in a small house he'd bought under a new identity in the Cayman's. ID'd by his fingerprints when the new ID didn't lead the authorities anywhere. They notified the FBI, who notified me."

Danny closed his eyes, but the tears leaked out anyway. Suddenly, arms were around him, and Danny threw all macho posturing aside and wept bitterly into McGarrett's shirt. Steve knew they were tears of guilt as well as loss. Danny had been beating himself up for weeks, wondering what else he could have - should have done to prevent everything that had happened.

Seeing what was happening through the glass of their offices, both Chin and Kono where in the doorway moments later. At their questioning glances, Steve told them,

"Danny's brother was found dead this morning in the Cayman Islands. Once authorities there ID'd him and notified the FBI, the fibbies gave him what info they had. The Cayman Authorities and the fibbies are in agreement that Matt was probably killed by the Columbian Cartel he stole the money from."

"The money he was supposed to launder?" Chin asked, but it was not really a question. Steve nodded. "Of course they couldn't let him get away with something like that." Chin said grimly. "They got any leads?" Steve shook his head. "Figures. They probably never will, either."

Chin and Kono touched Danny on shoulder and arm.

"We're really sorry, Danny." Kono said for them both. Sniffling, wiping his eyes roughly with his sleeve, Danny looked up at them.

"Thanks." He managed shakily.

"You want me to make the notification to your family?" Steve offered, but Danny shook his head.

"No. I - I need to do this myself." Danny told him. Steve squeezed Danny's shoulder in acknowledgement and sympathy.

"Ok. And you know you can take all the time you need for everything you need to do, right?"

"Thanks."

The others retreated out of Danny's office to give him some privacy for what they knew would be the hardest phone call he had ever made. But they would be there for him in the days and weeks ahead. Because the Williams' weren't the only family Danny had.
