James would never tell Lily the real reason why he is sneaking into her dorm almost every night these days. He keeps telling her that he just loves waking up next to her. And that is true, he swears on the marauder's, but it's just not the whole story.
His reason for sneaking off to Lily is the same as Pete's reason to sleep hidden behind a couch in the common room. It's Sirius and Remus. It's the fact that they are a couple. He and Pete feel like intruder's when they are sleeping in their dorm.
It's not that James is not happy for the two of them, he actually considers them perfect for each other. They contemplate each other like he and Lily do. But that doesn't change the fact, that he not only wants to give them some privacy (after all, he and lily have it. Her dorm mates sleep at their boyfriends dorms) but he also feels left out. Almost jealous. Because they are his two best friends in the world and they share something he is not a part of. A new and deeper level of intimacy. He has this with Lily, true, but that doesn't seem to be any kind of comfort.
So he hides, tries to ignore the little green monster inside his tummy. And he hopes they won't notice. He doesn't want them to feel guilty or responsible. And it seems to work... for a long time... until one night two different hands slip out beneath the blanket on remus bed and pull him closer. He hears sirius voice, whispering so quietly that he almost misses it "She knows... it's okay. Come closer..."
