Parting
The ocean reached for the sky, spreading as far as the eye could see. The sky could never reach the sea, I knew. Although, maybe the sea could reach the sky. A pure white full moon hung in the night, reflecting on the water and lighting up the sea and sky with a brilliant light. Stars neatly twinkled and glittered, worlds, more than anyone could count. I sat on the shore watching the waves crash gently on the beach, touching the land gently. A wind blew lifting my lifeless red hair. He would leave tonight, on a journey to reconnect the chains that had been broken. I would be alone again, Riku would be going as well, I knew.
A familiar shadow hovered above me.
"Hey Kairi, I'll be going as well. Don't worry I'll be back," He touched me gently, putting his hand on my shoulder, "I'll make sure he comes back too." It was Riku talking in a soft tone, but still strong.
"I knew you would go." I say to a certain degree of sadness.
"We will be back, don't worry." And with that he gestured a goodbye and walked silently away. The waves on the beach seemed to push towards more land, but ended up not going as far as it had.
Then, someone sat besides me, I knew who it was. He should be leaving, yet he came for me.
"Kairi..." He started. His eyes were bright, like the lit up sky, but held a sadness. "I'm sorry I have to leave again," He sounded so sorry, I was afraid it would break me and force me to destroy the barrier I had created to keep in my sadness, my feeling of loneliness to come.
"But I'll be back! It's a promise!" He said it so confidently, I felt myself believing every word with all of my heart.
He got up, and I panicked. I reached for the good luck charm I had made, the symbol of our unbreakable promise. It wasn't there. He walked away, my chance had left. It was the last time I would see him, for who knows how long. And then, hope burst inside me, I ran from the shore, the land seemed to help me run faster than ever before. I knew where I had left it.
I came to the small island, a little ways away from the main one, coming to a long tree, stretching out towards the ocean and sky, but still rooted in the land. The charm lie still on its trunk. I picked it up and looked towards the dock, the gummi ship, now fashioned as a boat, floated still in the water. I could see Riku getting on to the boat.
I ran again, the wind pushing me back.
I ran, the boat seemed to be moving away. I could see everyone on board already.
I ran, I was on the dock; the boat was already pushing past the end.
I ran, until I reached the end of the pier, the boat almost too far to reach, and then, I jumped.
Suddenly the wind pushed me back, I would fall. I reached out my hand and closed my eyes, waiting for the cold impact of the salty ocean. And then a warm hand grabbed mine pulling me upwards, towards the sky.
I was pulled on deck, the floor safely under my feet. About to open my eyes, strong arms came around me, holding me still. My eyes were still closed, but I knew who it was. I dropped the charm; I knew there would be no parting. Our hearts beat together in sync, his warm embrace filled my mind with reassurance. It felt like there was nothing else in the world that could separate us, it felt as if we were one. He released his arms and I opened my eyes. His blue eyes shimmered reflecting the sky and sea. He smiled kindly; reassuring me we would stay together. He picked up my charm and gave it back to me, but I closed his fingers around it.
"Just promise me, we'll come back here together, all of us." I said.
"It's a promise Kairi." Sora said holding my hands.
We looked out to sea, and for a second, it seemed as though the sea had touched the sky, even though I had thought that was practically impossible. The ship sailed on through the ocean, and soon into the sky, towards new worlds.
