Mason Oliver hated the military, it was a bitter winter night and he was freezing cold, an icy chill from the wind cutting into his exposed skin making it glow a very painful red colour. Why was he here, he was a soldier working on the outside of the quarantine zone. This was work reserved for some civilian not a experienced soldier like himself, and that is why he hated the military right now, was it so obvious that they had no value for his life or any other life in the squad that currently surrounded him. He paid no attention to their petty conversation, it only consisted of complaints or people reliving some painful memory.

So lost in thought Mason didn't realise the squad had stopped moving and swiftly walked right into the backpack of the person in front of him. It was a country track why the sudden stop, now he began to tune his ears in to the squads conversation. Silence. Nobody was speaking, this worried him and this was something hard to accomplish after all the hardship he had forced himself was a country lane they were all halted in, thick mud underfoot and small woods either side of the squad, it was pitch dark and a erie setting to be halted in. Mason was just waiting for death to come from that darkness.

Mason really ought to stop thinking things like that because at that moment he almost got his wish. A swirling noise hit his ears just followed by a loud thud this time coming from the damp mud just behind him, he turned to examine the noise before his squad cried out almost in unison.

Bomb, take cover!'

A blinding flash and that's all it took to put Mason on his back and rapidly forcing him unconscious.
