I 'm Afraid of the Dark

On a hill in Pennsylvania rests a mansion, painted a sterilized white. Situated right next to it is a dark forest; in the center of these woods is a hole that attacks the moonlight surrounding it. But, through this vertical tunnel, deep underground, is where you will find a young girl trapped in a suspended cage.

"Are you enjoying your visit, Vivienne?" asks a mysterious man who seems to come straight out of the shadows themselves. The girl doesn't answer, nor does she make any gesture to show that she heard.

The pale man laughs a deep, evil laugh. "Poor child ... I bet you want to go home, don't you? Return to your family and your little boyfriend." The shadows seem to laugh with the man and the girl moves closer into herself. "But you won't ever see them again! You know why? Because you're a selfish, disgusting little..."

As the girl tries to block out the man's insults, she notices that the shadows are moving closer. The darkness is stifling, it has her surrounded. She's scared.

She tries to go to her happy place and finds herself thinking of him, her beautiful idiot, and the one who stole her heart by stealing her cat. She still remembers that day and even manages a smile. He's the reason she was still holding on, the reason she wouldn't give up. She would never give up, not when her charming best friend was still out there, waiting for her.

Something hits the cage and sends her spinning, catching the black-haired girl off guard. The cage spins around the dark room in large circles, making the imprisoned girl nauseous. She tries to close her eyes on the pain, but finds them forced open. She sees only faces: mocking, glaring, ridiculing, all while watching her. All her senses are drawn onto the dark underground room, forced to listen to the manic laughter of the man and watch the evil faces of the shadows as she swings around the room. She's scared.

"I'm scared..." whispers the girl. "I'm scared!" She screams.

"Good!" Shouts the man, "You deserve all the fear I can offer!" And he launches a nightmarish assault that leaves the girl screaming in torment.

When he's finished, the despicable man abandons the girl lying on the floor of the cage, locked in a losing battle with her worse fears. She's slipping more and more into the darkness. No one's coming, she realises.

"No one cares" a voice whispers back. The girl doesn't know why it took her so long to come to this realisation; how could she of thought something different would occur? Pitch Black was too strong, too powerful. She knows now that no matter what you do, the darkness will always be there and fear will always win.

Pitch's prisoner isn't afraid anymore, she is nothing. All that is left in her is dullness, a void that used to hold love. Her belief has been shattered.

A door opens from the left and a white light illuminates the small room with an old woman sitting on the floor, hunched over in pain, her head in her knees.

"It's time for your medicine, Ms. Black." The young nurse enters the simple room and hands the graying women a blue pill. Ms. Black opens her mouth and swallows the pill dry.

"There. That's better, isn't it?" The kindly nurse receives no response, but then she didn't expect to. The young woman then helps the old lady out of her position on the floor and leads her to the single bed in the middle of the room. The nurse puts the woman to bed and the aged Vivienne closes her eyes to savor the silence she knows will come soon, because no matter what you do or who you are, the darkness always comes.
