A/N: Sorry to everyone who's waiting on my other stories. I've got a bit of writer's block. In fact this is the first thing I've written in a while and it came to me in a waking dream. I hope it's not too random for you. It is almost 4am. And please no random flames, ok? Anyway, Enjoy!
P.S. BJ and Lyds don't belong to me. No matter how much I dream!
It was a rainy night in the Neitherworld. Lydia and Beetlejuice sat on the moldy old maroon couch watching "Sherlock Bones and the Case of the Red Skeleton" and eating popcorn. Lydia had decided long ago, during her freshman year, to spend her summers with Beetlejuice. Her college classes took up so much of her free time that she rarely got to see him anymore. Thankfully it was the summer before her senior year so she didn't have much work left. As the movie went to commercial Lydia got up to refill her bowl. When she came back she noticed Beetlejuice acting a little funny. He was playing with his tie nervously, straightening it slightly, oddly enough.
Lydia sat down and Beetlejuice put his arm over her shoulder, turning towards her. "Um Babes, I was wondering.. Would you like to go to the Beltane Festival with me? See I would have asked you sooner but I didn't realize it was this weekend and.."
She grinned and interrupted him. "Sure Beej, I'll go." He smiled and gave her shoulder a little squeeze. They settled back and watched the rest of the movie in silence, minus the occasional crunch of a hapless beetle being munched on.
May 1st came and Beetlejuice took Lyd's to the festival. Lydia was all over the place taking photos. "I can't wait to develop these. I'll win that prize money for sure and I won't have to worry about supplies for at least one, maybe both semesters!"
Beetlejuice looked at her and sighed. He didn't have the heart to tell her right now.
Lydia, having spent so much time at the Roadhouse, had her own darkroom there. Beetlejuice loved the smell of chemicals in the morning, just like rotten eggs. It had been a month since the festival and Lydia still hadn't picked her favorite shot to send in to the contest.
Having narrowed it down between three different scenes, Lydia plopped on the couch and handed to them over to Beetlejuice to get his opinion. "Any one of these would have won it for you Babes," he said, tossing them on the coffee table. "But you and I both know you aren't going back there."
"What are you talking about Beej? I have to go back, I only have one year left then I'll have my B.A.!"
"Babes," He took her in his arms and pulled her into his lap. "Don't you remember? The caves in Pine Hills?"
She looked at him quizzically. He ran his fingers through his crusty, moldy hair and looked her straight in the eye. "Oh Babes, how do I say this? You were taking pictures of some bats or something up in those caves up in Pine Hills. Something weakened a support beam and there was a collapse. You called for me but it was too late, your body was crushed. Babes, you're dead."
