Maybe I really am a cashew. For loving you...
The setting suns red rays attempted to best Kairi's red hair in color, as the said girl sat at the edge of the docks. Her legs swung back and forth as she let herself slip into deep thought. Her fingers moved to the can of cashews that sat beside her and slowly she popped one after another in her mouth before chewing and swallowing them.
The sound of Sora laughing in the background rung through her ears, along with the conversations of those around him. Wakka, Riku, Tidus, Selphie. She could hear them all chattering around Sora's loud laugh.
That in itself hurt her. Immensely.
For she loved him. With a rare and beautiful passion. But to him? To him she was nothing more then a mere friend of convience.
It's a lovely thing to know, really, that you are only important when there's no one else around.
Automatically she reached down and grabbed some more cashews.
Maybe she was just being bitter. Maybe she was just being greedy. Selfish. Wanting- no...NEEDING more attention then he was willing to give her. But then again, she was no fool. She knew it, probably better then anyone else, that when it came to Riku she paled in comparison.
Feh. Apparently love doesn't conquer all, now does it? ...Or at least not HER love.
Self conscious eyes looked over herself in disgust. Horrible. Ugly. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Maybe at one point in time, a point she cant even really remember anymore, she might have found herself pretty. But now all she could see were the flaws in herself.
Was it because of her looks?
More cashews entered her mouth as she munched thoughtfully.
She was annoying too. She could admit that now. She was horribly, dreadfully annoying. Always depending on Sora to come to her rescue. Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Maybe if she had been stronger. Maybe if she hadn't given him her heart...
Was it because she was annoying?
Her eyes prickled with tears. Her stomach lurched. God the pain hurt! It physically hurt! "Sora..." She mewled pitifully as she folded over herself, wishing she would just fall into the docks below and be whisked away. To another world maybe. A world which she could forget how much it hurt to not be cared for.
This... This was more then just unrequited love. This was about not being important enough to have a second spared to.
Was it because of her looks? Was it because she was annoying? Where those the reasons he chose Riku over her? Where those the reasons he ignored her until he had no one left?
As if to answer her question, she heard a soft chorus of "Bye Sora!"s and heard the heavy footsteps of his coming towards her. Oh heaven have mercy! Seeing him now would only cause her more pain.
Nothing more then a few seconds later found that he was sitting beside her, smiling cheerfully. Oblivious of the silent sobs that wracked her body. "Hey Kairi!" He started, staring off into the sky. "I was thinking. Tomorr-" He was cut off before he even finished the statement.
"Hey Sora! Hurry up, we changed our mind. Lets go get some ice-cream!"
"HEY! YEAH! SOUNDS GOOD!" With that he jumped up and without even looking back dashed off. Without so much as a goodbye.
She stayed bent over, crying for some time after he was gone. Finally once she calmed down she looked at her Cashews and let out a bitter laugh.
How befitting she was eating these.
Because she was a nut. Because only a nut could willingly put herself through what she does. Because only a nut would watch as the man she loved ran off into the arms of another. Another man.
Because only a nut would let themselves stay a friend of convince.
Because only a nut would let themselves .o.n.l.y. matter when there was No OnE ELsE.
Because only cashews cried alone.
