A little one-shot on Rebekah's feelings of resentment after spending most of her life running.
She's one of my favorite characters on the show, along with Damon, Klaus, and Katherine. Yeah, I have a weakness for the bad guys. :)
I can really relate to her character because underneath all her aggressiveness and stubbornness, she's just a normal teenage girl.
Anyway, nothing's mine and I hope you guys enjoy it.
Inescapable
Just when her life is at its glorious peak and she begins to hope it'll last forever, the ghosts (or rather, vampires) of her past, always manage to catch up with her.
How many times she had fled from cities like Rome, Istanbul, and many other beautiful, exciting places?
How many aliases she went under, transforming herself into a different person with each name?
How many years she spent in hiding, living in abandoned houses or in the wilderness, with no link to the civilized world?
How many times she had to leave a party-be it a spectacular ball or a wild masquerade-turning her back on the music, the dancing, and the near-bacchanalian revelry?
How many lovers she had left behind, brokenhearted and with no note, only her memory?
She can't count them, even with two thousand years under her belt.
Centuries of dancing on different threads that eventually get cut short convinces her she is destined for a nomadic existence. She accepts all happiness and enjoyment that comes her way with indifference, knowing whatever life she's leading at the moment is transient in nature. She builds a wall around herself, so that she never has to feel the disappointment, the heartbreak, and the resentment that follow whenever her past resurfaces.
She travels different routes, trails off the beaten path, long, winding roads that seem to lead her to the distant corners of the earth, hoping to find the blessed freedom she longs for.
But deep down, she knows, that all will eventually end with them. Always and forever.
And she hates it.
