Author Note
I wrote this story a long time ago, mainly because I wanted to show a story that shows Steve as a Dad, a goofy, perhaps not always doing the right thing Dad but a loving Dad nonetheless. This story for anyone curious fits into the Navy SEAL saga where Steve and Danni meet when they are twenty-one and nineteen and end up eloping together.
It should hopefully be about four maybe five chapters long.
Please enjoy.

Chapter One
"Danni, are you awake?" Steve McGarrett waited for a second to see whether his wife would respond before sighing, his eyes fixed on her flushed face with concern. Every instinct he possessed was telling him that he should call his second in command to let the other man know that he wouldn't be in so he could take care of Danielle but he stopped himself. Knowing deep down that if he did that then Danielle would react badly when she found out and the last thing, he wanted was to make her worried when she needed to rest.
He leaned down and gently kissed her hot forehead, his frown growing when he felt how clammy her skin was beneath his lips before he pulled back, his eyes flickering towards the alarm clock. He felt tired already, the past day and a half had been spent looking after their large brood after Danielle fell ill with the flu on Saturday afternoon. He thought that he had coped surprisingly well but now it was Monday which meant that he had to get to work, however much he didn't want to.
There had been a small part of him which had hoped that Danni would have thrown off the illness by now but it was clear that she wasn't going anywhere, anytime soon. Their housekeeper Rose Hanamoa would take care of her while Steve was gone, that much he knew and the school runs would be taken care of their nanny stroke bodyguard Liam O'Brien which left just their youngest child Oliver who was a mere three months. A child who Steve had decided already to take to work with him and take care of him there.
It made sense after all, he had enough milk to last him throughout the day so there would be little trouble with feeding Oliver when he became hungry and he knew as well that it would comfort Danielle to know that Oliver was with him and safe.
Steve would never allow any harm to come to their child, not while he was still breathing.
He stilled in his action of stroking her hair away from her face when she moved beneath his light touch, a slight frown crossing her features for a moment before it smoothed out as she sank back into sleep.
Steve straightened, forcing himself to walk out of their bedroom and making a mental note to himself to call Malia Kelly on his way into the office to ask her to come over and check on Danielle before her shift at the hospital she worked at started. His wife was too stubborn when it came to her health, viewing it as unimportant compared to others while Steve viewed her health as one of the most important things in his world.
He sighed silently, pulling the door closed behind him, trying to ignore the guilt which was plaguing him at the thought of leaving her behind. He knew it would only be for a short time and that Rose would remain with her but he wanted it to be him who took care of her, just like she always took care of him and their family.
Steve headed down the corridor and entered the small blue nursery at the end, his attention focusing on the cot as he approached it. He smiled at the sight of the small blond baby within it. Oliver was wide awake, his blue-grey eyes focused on the ceiling as he grabbed at his toes, bringing them towards his mouth, clearly with the intent of eating them. The fact that his toes were covered by the baby suit he was wearing clearly didn't factor into his decision or bother him in the slightest.
"No baby boy, if you want breakfast then we can find you something tastier to eat other than your foot" Steve comment as he leaned on the side, reaching into the cot with one hand and capturing both Oliver's feet in a gentle grasp. Oliver automatically turned his head at the sound of Steve's voice, staring up at him for a second with wide eyes before a large gummy smile spread across his small face, a cry of what sounded like happiness escaping the small baby.
Steve smiled when Oliver lifted his chubby arms up towards him, letting his feet go and scooping him up into his arms, burying his face into Oliver's neck and breathing in the familiar scent, allowing it, and the warm weight in his arms to comfort him.
"So, here's the deal little man" Steve said as he pulled back and met his son's eyes. "You're going to spend the whole day with Daddy at his work. Mamma isn't feeling very well and she won't look after herself the way she needs to if she thinks that you're here because she will make you her number one priority and trust Daddy when he says that you are too young to catch what your Mamma has. Daddy would never sleep again and Mamma would be extremely upset once she realised you caught it from her, so you're going to be stuck with me and your godfather and your crazy Aunties and Uncles who will lose their minds when they see you but don't worry because I won't leave your side and you'll be with me the whole time, I promise" He said softly, twisting side to side on the spot before kissing Oliver's cheek.
He fell silent, cuddling Oliver closer to him and just enjoying the moment between them, wishing that there could be more of them before he looked around him, his eyes landing on the outfit which had been laid out neatly on top of the dresser. He frowned at it, adjusting Oliver so he could rub at his forehead, a slither of annoyance coming over him. He knew that Danielle always picked out the clothes nightly for their youngest children which meant that some time during the night when Steve had been asleep, she had gotten out of bed to pick the outfit out rather than resting.
He swallowed down his growl and instead moving across the room to the changing mat, placing Oliver down on it, swiftly stripped him of his baby suit and changing his nappy with a confidence which spoke of experience. He hummed softly, pulling on the green polo shirt Danielle had chosen on Oliver before he picked up the dark jeans, staring at them for a moment before shaking his head and throwing them down on the chair beside him. He kept a hand on Oliver, holding him steady as he pulled open the top drawer and rummaged through it for a moment before he picked out a pair of black cargo pants, identical to the pair he had chosen for himself.
"You little man are going to dress just like Daddy today" He told Oliver who merely stared up at him, cooing to himself. He smiled, pulling them on before his gaze flickered towards the window when he heard a familiar sequence of beeps which told him that his work partner Danny Williams had just arrived and was waiting outside for him so they could get on with the work day. "That would be your Godfather Danno so let's go and say goodbye to everyone and head off so we can go and see what all the naughty people have been doing over the weekend." He commented as he picked up Oliver, brushing a kiss over his soft blond hair before he headed out of the room and down the corridor heading towards the stairs. He came to a stop, his eyes focusing on his five-year-old son Jonathan who was standing by Steve's and Danielle's bedroom, peering through the door in a hesitant manner. "Hey buddy" He remarked gently, coming to a stop beside him and watching as Jonathan retreated from him, staring at him with big dark eyes.
"Hey Daddy" Jonathan replied in his usual serious sounding voice.
"What are you doing up here by the door?" Steve asked the young boy curiously. "Shouldn't you be downstairs, waiting by the front door? Uncle Liam needs to put you and Rowan int the car so he can take you off to school. The last thing you want is to be late right?" He queried, unsurprised when Jonathan immediately shook his head in response.
"Daddy why is Mamma still in bed? Is she okay? Should I give her a hug to make her feel better?" He asked glancing towards the door with a worried look which pulled at Steve's heart, making him automatically reach out and rest his hand on Jonathan's shoulder as he hunched down in front of him so they were face to face.
"I know that your Mamma loves your hugs Jonno but you're going to have to hold onto them for the next couple of days okay? She's not very well at the moment so she's resting up, that's why she is still in bed." Steve explained, squeezing down on Jonathan's shoulder before he stood up again, glancing into their bedroom, his heart giving a painful lurch at the sight of his wife curled up in the middle of their bed with one arm flung out towards Steve's side as though she was reaching for him in her sleep.
"Why is Mamma not well? What's wrong with her?" Jonathan asked hesitantly, moving his weight from one foot to the other.
"Well, do you remember two weeks ago when you and the others were all ill with the flu?" Steve asked, waiting until Jonathan nodded at him before continuing. "Well Mamma has the same thing now so we're all going to have to remain quiet and help each other until she's back on her feet and feeling better okay?" He said, smiling when Jonathan gave him a determined nod. "I knew I could count on you Buddy" He said, leaning down and dropping a kiss on Jonathan's head before he leaned back "Now off you go" He said, a smile coming to his face when Liam's voice was heard from the bottom of the stairs.
"Jonno are you up there? Its time to go little man"
"See" Steve said, ruffling his older son's hair. "Off you go Jonno, have a good day at school and remember I love you."
"I love you too Daddy" Jonathan told him seriously before flashing him a smile and scampering down the stairs. Steve shook his head, glancing into the bedroom once more before pulling the door closed. She needed rest and he needed to get to work unless he wanted Danny storming into the house looking for him.
Steve headed down the stairs himself, stopping at the bottom when his nine-year-old daughter Daisy stepped smoothly in his way, a large innocent smile on her face which immediately placed him on guard as he scanned her blue eyes carefully, blue eyes which were the exact shade as his own.
"Morning Daddy, Mamma promised me last week that I could go around my friend Lucy's house tonight and that she would pick me up from there." She stated loudly "But now I don't know if she's going to pick me up now but she said I could go and I…" Her eyes widened when Steve gently hushed her, keeping his hand up in a stopping sign as he glanced over his shoulder, listening carefully to make sure that the loud voice hadn't disturbed Danielle before he turned back to look at Daisy.
"Your Mamma is ill Monkey and staying in bed today." Steve explained "What time were you meant to stay there until?"
"Mamma said I could stay until seven, Lucy's Mom is going to make us dinner there." Daisy told him. Steve looked at her for a moment, his eyes flickering up to the door in time to see Rose enter before he looked back at his daughter.
"Your bed time is seven thirty" He pointed out, raising an eyebrow when she shrugged at him.
"I know Daddy, that's why Mamma was going to pick me up at seven because it meant that I could stay there for a bit and then come home and go straight to bed."
"What about your homework for tomorrow? When will you do that?" Steve queried wincing as Oliver's fingers pulled at his hair.
"I've done all my homework Daddy and if I get any tonight then I can do it at Lucy's. Daddy this is all planned, Mamma has already spoken to Lucy's Mom about it." Daisy said, a whine coming to her voice which caused Steve to sigh.
"Fine, I'll pick you up from her house at seven, text me the address later on today okay?" He told her "Now scram, Liam will be waiting for you" He said, smiling when she grinned at him before she skipped out of the door.
"Thanks Daddy, don't be late" She called over her shoulder causing Steve to sigh.
"You'll soon find Ollie that living in this household is like living in a place like grand central station, its all go, all the time." He said to Oliver who merely stared at him.
"You know that you wouldn't have it any other way sweetie"
Steve turned, smiling at Rose's comment before he nodded.
"You know me so well" He replied at the older woman. Rose was in her mid-fifties, a small, plump woman who was only slightly taller than Danielle was with a wide, cheerful smile which always seem to be on her face and twinkling dark brown eyes which saw everything. She had come to their family on a recommendation made by Danielle's friend Amy Hanamoa who was Rose's niece by marriage. All it had taken was one conversation before they had hired her. She no longer felt like their live-in nanny bur rather like one of the family, a third Grandmother to their children and a second mother to him and Danielle. The fact that she lived on their property in the guest house helped establish that feeling as she was always around.
"That I do, I do think that today went a little smoother than it normally does, probably due to the fact that they know their mother isn't well and its worried them, perhaps even scared them slightly since Danielle is rarely ill." Rose commented.
"I know but we know what is wrong with her and as long as she actually rests then she'll be okay before we know it." Steve said, glancing over his shoulder when another series of beeps, these ones more frenzied then the last, came from the front.
"That Daniel is so impatient at times." Rose said, a slight hint of disapproval to her voice.
"I'll be sure to tell him that, he'll be heartbroken all day to know you disapprove of him" Steve said with a laugh before he became serious. "If Danni needs anything then please call me Rose and I'll come straight home regardless of what I'm doing. I'm going to ask Malia to pop in to see her, so don't be surprised is she arrives at the house." He said, giving the older woman a kiss on the cheek before he headed to the front door, picking up Oliver's nappy bag which Rose had already packed and left for him. He waved at her, pulling the front door closed behind him and jogged towards his truck, unlocking it and grabbing the baby seat from within before he slammed the door and locked it again.
Shifting his baby, he headed towards the silver Camaro which was parked behind his truck in the driveway. He opened the passenger seat and passed his son over to his work partner, ignoring the surprised look the other man gave him as he accepted Oliver, his attention focusing back on his phone call.
"Damn it Rachel" Steve heard him snap down the phone as he made his way to the back of the car and opened the door, quickly strapping in the baby seat as he continued to listen in on the call, noting that however angry Danny sounded, his hold on Oliver remained gentle as he bounced the small boy up and down in his arm. "Grace is my daughter as well in case you've forgotten that fact. What is it, do you think that because I'm now engaged that Grace is no longer the most important person in my world? Are you deluded? Grace is my world and she will always be my world. We agreed about this trip weeks ago, we worked out the schedule so I could have her for ten days in a row, I've had to go without to have these days, you can not turn around to me now Rachel and say you've changed your mind, not when you gave me your word or does your word mean nothing?" He demanded, sounding furious as he continued to speak, clearly in a full-blown rant. "I've taken the time off from work and so has Abbie. You know that we are taking Grace and Abbie's children back to New Jersey so that we can spend time with my family, we…" His voice trailed off for a moment.
"Danno" Steve murmured, meeting the furious blue eyes when they swung towards him with a steady look as he nodded towards Oliver, indicating what he wanted. Danny passed Oliver back to him, waiting until Steve had Oliver securely in his arms before he continued to speak.
"No, no, no Rachel, you don't get to speak about Abbie's children that way, you don't even know them. Gracie treats them like siblings and the reason she does that is because we're a family, we're…" his voice trailed off again. "Fine, thank you" He stated before he hit the disconnect button, hitting his fist against the dashboard, his eyes flickering to Steve as Steve climbed into the driver's seat.
Steve remained quiet as he pulled his seatbelt on and turned the key in the ignition, he glanced over his shoulder towards Oliver, making sure he looked comfortable before he reversed the car out of the driveway and took the way which would lead them to their headquarters.
"What was that call about?" Steve asked once they were on the freeway, keeping his voice steady and calm, well aware that Oliver would pick up on any tension he showed.
"That call was about Rachel being a jealous ex-wife, that was what it was about" Danny stated lowly, a furious tone to his voice. "she's now decided that she doesn't want me to take Grace back to New Jersey because she doesn't like Abbie and doesn't know her children and therefore doesn't want Grace around them regardless of the fact that Grace has been around them and we are a family."
"I know you are buddy" Steve said calmly. "What did Rachel say at the end? Are you still heading to New Jersey?" He asked, breathing out a silent sigh of relief when Danny nodded.
"She relented by the end though that could be because I heard Grace pleading with her in the background to let her go as well, Rachel may hate me but she would never do anything to truly upset Grace." Danny said.
"Rachel doesn't hate you Danno" Steve pointed out.
"Yeah, yeah, I know all about your theory that you think she is still in love with me, but if that is the case then trying to keep me from Grace is the worst thing she could do. The simple fact is that she doesn't want me to be happy, in her mind its completely fine for her to move on and remarry but I'm not allowed to, she just wanted me to be at her beck and call at all times and it kills her that I've moved on as well and that I'm actually happy and began to make a life here." He said, reaching up with his hand and rubbing his hand down his face before he sighed and twisted round in his chair, smiling at Oliver. "So where exactly are we dropping my beautiful godson off at, has Danielle got an appointment or something because normally this little guy is glued to her hip." He asked, looking back at Steve in time to see the smug smile which came across the other man's face. There was no doubt that Steve was a badass Navy SEAL with a tendency to cause bodily harm first and to ask questions later on but there was no doubt either that beneath that hard shell was a man who turned into a gooey mess the minute someone complimented either his wife or his children.
"We're not dropping him off anywhere" Steve answered with a shrug. "Ollie is staying with me today and coming into work with us."
"I'm sorry, what now?" Danny demanded shooting Steve a look of shock. "Are you out of your mind Steven? Ollie is three months old, I mean you do remember what we do for a living on a daily basis right? You cannot expose a baby that young to anything like that. Where the hell is Danielle? There is no situation where I can picture your wife willingly agreeing to Ollie coming to work with you."
Steve turned his head, answering Danny's look of shock with one of confusion as he raised a dark eyebrow at him.
"I've hardly forgotten what I do for a living within two days of being away Danno" He replied mildly. "Danni came down with the flu which the kids had a couple of weeks ago so she's currently in bed, hopefully sleeping and gaining her strength back. She can't look after Ollie so it makes sense for me to have him. I don't know why you're so worried either, we both know that the Five-O headquarters is the safest place on the island Danny, there is nothing which will happen to him while he's there, especially since he shall be with me every second of the day."
"Wait, wait, wait, just back up a moment Steven. Are you telling me that you haven't actually told Danielle that you're bringing Ollie with you to work? So, she has no idea that he isn't in the house with her?" Danny demanding his eyes widening further when Steve shrugged at him in response.
"Are you not listening Danny, that's just what I told you, do you need to go and get your ears tested or something? Danielle is sick with the flu and therefore not capable to look after a three-month-old baby and Rose will have enough on her plate as it is. I wasn't going to wake her up from her rest when I knew how much she needed it. Between this and the way she's been working herself down into the ground today at the bakery, she needs the time to recover and rest." Steve stated.
"Yeah but…" Danny began to say, stopping when Steve spoke over his, a commanding tone to his voice which made it clear that he was done with the conversation.
"In case it has escaped your notice Ollie is half of me. The hair and eye colour may belong to my wife but these features" He said, waving his hand around his face indicating what he meant. "Are the same features which Oliver has and you know why that is? Its because I am his father which means that when my wife is out of action for some reason then I am responsible for him and the others and therefore it up to me to make the decision concerning them and I've made the decision to keep Ollie with me today. End of discussion." He stated, swiping one hand through the air.
"Fine, just do me one favour and let me be in the room with you when Danielle finds out what you have done and she rips you a new one. After the weekend I have had dealing with Rachel I could use the entertainment." Danny replied, smiling when Steve shot him a glare though he was saved from anything which Steve may have said when the other man's cell phone went off, attracting his attention. He picked it up, flashing his partner one more glare before answering.
"McGarrett" He barked down the phone, pausing slightly before a familiar voice came across the line
"Boss? It's Jenna, I'm sorry to call at a bad time but we've just got word from dispatch that we have a case. The Governor want you and Danny to head to the scene straight away to contain it. From the reports we've received, the case and the scene are a nasty one-"
"I distinctively heard the word carnage being used boss" Came the familiar voice of Toast indicating the younger man was hovering near Jenna, probably listening in on the conversation.
"Chin, Kono, Jack and David have left here and are on route to the scene" Jenna continued as though Toast had remained silent. "And I've contacted Ryan as well to get a CSU team sent down there."
"Understood Jenna" Steve said professionally before his tone changed slightly, become slightly friendlier. "While you're on the line Jenna, I know that you were meant to have lunch with my wife today but I'm afraid she's not going to be able to make it. She's down with the flu."
"Danni is down with the flu?" Jenna repeated.
"The flu?" Toast demanded, his voice becoming louder as though he had grabbed the phone from Jenna. "What do you mean the flu, Danni doesn't get sick, is she okay?"
"She will be Toast, now pass the phone back to Jenna" Steve commanded, ignoring the ache growing behind his eyes. Sometimes dealing with Toast was like dealing with one of his children.
"Is she okay?" Jenna asked, sounding worried over the line.
"She'll be fine once she's rested, now tell us more about the case" He said, hitting the loudspeaker and passing the phone to Danny who took it, holding it between them so Steve could focus his attention on driving.
"The Medical Examiner today is Abbie, she's already there with a team. The coordinates of the scene have been texted to both yours and Danny's phones. The team will be waiting down there for your instructions." She informed him, a pinging sound in his ear announcing the arrival of the text.
"Great, thanks for the info Jenna" Steve said looking towards Danny who took the hint and ended the call before passing the cell phone back to him.
"Looks like we're two street away from where we need to be" Danny said, looking down at his own phone before he looked up with a frown when Steve hit the indicator, taking the street to the left of them. "I'm already dreading the answer to this but what do you think you're doing?" He demanded.
"What do you think I'm doing Danny? I'm heading towards the crime scene." Steve answered.
"Steven, you have a three-month baby in the backseat. How about you turn the car around, drive us all back to headquarters and then drop yourself and your son off there while I drive back to the crime scene, you can give any instructions you have remotely to us."
"What's the point in doing that when we're already here. The quicker we get this done the better it will be, I don't want Ollie to miss his ten-o clock bottle." Steve stated as he parked the car next to the kerb and killed the engine, climbing out of the car and looked around him, his eyes moving over the taped off area before he moved to the back of the car and opened the door, unstrapping Oliver from his chair and lifting the baby into his arm, adjusting him so he was comfortable.
"Steven!" Danny said, disbelief in his voice which reflected his expression. "Seriously what the hell are you doing? Are you even using your brain right now? You cannot bring Oliver into the actual crime scene, he is a baby for god sake. What is the unsub is still in the area watching us? Do you want him to see your baby? Do you think Danielle would want an unsub to see your child or for him to be here?"
"Danielle isn't here Danno, I want Ollie to be with me where I can see him at all time. Do you honestly believe even for a second that I would put mine and Danni's baby at risk? I would never let anything happen to him so let's go" He stated firmly, moving Oliver so he was resting against Steve chest before he wrapped his shirt around him, hiding the small baby from the view of anyone who wasn't close to them. Oliver buried his face into Steve's neck, one small hand clutching at the material of Steve's t-shirt. Steve ducked beneath the yellow tape and moved across the area to where his team were gathered. "What do we know?" He asked as he approached.
"It's a triple homicide" Riley King remarked, waving his arm out to indicate the scene. "Abbie said that the bodies have been here for about three hours though she's not sure whether they were moved here or whether this is the primary crime scene, that will be up to CSU to determine I guess."
"Steve" David Richardson suddenly said, a rare sharp tone to his voice which attracted everyone's attention to him. "What is my youngest nephew doing here?"
Steve focused on his wife's twin and smiled, raising Oliver's hand from his shirt and waving at David before he spoke, imitating a baby's voice.
"Hi Uncle Davey, I'm officer McGarrett and I'm working with Daddy today so we want to know all about the scene" He stated, his smile turning into a grin when David rolled his eyes at him.
"I wish I had filmed that" David commented, his face breaking out into a grin when Jack spoke up.
"Don't worry David, I've got you covered, Toast put cameras in our bullet proof vest and mine just happened to be on so its probably in the process of being put up on YouTube as we speak." He said with a laugh.
"Funny" Steve said. "Now, lets focus and get to work."
