Christmas Cookies

She spent the entire afternoon at her perch by the kitchen window refusing to leave the kitchen and the mug of warm chocolate in her hand unless the skies decided to grant her wish. It was freezing outside and the weather man had predicted several snow showers, getting Marlene very excited but then shattering her hopes when the snow refused to arrive.

"Marly, you can't really expect the universe to obey you, you know?" he said for the fifteenth time that day as he tried desperately to dislodge her from the kitchen.

Just then, she noticed little white flakes making their first journey downwards and whooped crazily with pleasure, rendering Sirius nearly deaf.

"What did I tell you!" she hollered, throwing her arms around him and hugging him tight. He grinned as he picked her off the little seat and swung her around and she shrieked.

"Snow snow snow snow!" she yelled, and Sirius couldn't believe that she was getting this excited for a few snowflakes. He then realised that she'd been desperately waiting for it to snow the entire month and wondered if there was a reason behind it.

"So," he asked her casually as he set her down on her feet. "Do you have anything special planned for today?"

Marlene bit her lip. "There's a reason I've been waiting for it to snow," she confessed, and Sirius looked on expectantly.

"I'm well aware, love," he said drily, and she let out a little giggle. "What is it?"

"Three years ago, when Lily and I stayed back at Hogwarts for Christmas and you and James had decided to abandon us poor souls and head on home instead…" Sirius shook his head at her dramatic declaration and she looked at him accusingly.

"Well, we asked you to stay and you refused!"

"Are you going to tell me what you plan to do, and how this involves Lily?"

"You're such an escapist. Anyway," she continued hastily when she saw his mouth open.

"She literally bribed the house elves to let her bake us cookies that year, because she said she wanted to show me what her Christmases were like, when she was young, and then we found a stash of eggnog, and one thing led to the other, and well…"

Sirius looked like he'd just swallowed doxy eggs.

"And then?" he whispered, and Marlene rolled her eyes. "Lily had asked me to look after the cookies while she got us some hot chocolate to have with it, but I ended up discovering the eggnog and abandoning her cookies. Needless to say, neither she nor the house elves were pleased." She grinned at the memory of her antics and Sirius shook his head, amused.

He hardly had time to ask his next question when a loud pop came from the living room and Lily's voice bounced through the house.

Marlene grinned.

"It's baking time!"
