Words: 100

Characters: Oz Vessalius and Alice (Baskerville)

Warning: Contains spoilers, set after Elliot's death

Beyond their understanding, they are here together in this silence of the deepest depths of night, neither speaking a word. Back-to-back in the windowsill with the silver glow seeping in through the glass, this is the solace they share.

A crescendo of warbles, loud and clear, a song through the darkness and peace. "What's that?" Alice asks in soft curiosity.

Oz stirs. "It sounds like a nightingale."

She is not satisfied with that alone. "Why is it singing?"

"Because it exists to sing," he answers simply, slowly reviving.

"And why do we exist?"

He pauses. He wonders. "Perhaps to choose."
