Blood Veins of New York

The mirror had cracked from side to side, a storm of blistering hot lead narrowly missing my skull and hitting the glass behind me, one bullet grazing along my cheek. The world froze for a moment as my panicking mind acknowledged the searing pain running down one side of my face and a thick liquid dripping down my neck. Suddenly all sound and movement merged back to reality as I saw three more tears of injustice flying towards me like snarling beasts, one submerging deep into my shoulder. I felt a crimson pool gently flowing from where the bullet had hit. I made a break for the door, knocking it open with my good shoulder and falling onto the icey floor shortly after. The loss of blood began to make m light-headed. At a snail's pace I regained my balance. I began running with a hand clutched tight on my shoulder, but I was lost in the blood veins of New York. Today was truly hell, and it was a cold day in hell. As I struggled on I soon realised she was pursuing me. I heard the witch's murmurs trying to intimidate me. Three more rounds were fired, two passing by my left ear, one hitting the ground, blowing up ice and snow into my face. "Don't you ever die?!" I heard her shout; her words were enriched with wrath. Normally I would have answered back with a snappy joke, but not this time. Maybe it was my "quick wit" that had provoked her so much initially. Then, my mind cleared and I saw a chance to end this battle. I ran into an alley and crouched awkwardly behind a hefty wooden crate. She reached the alley and stopped. I noticed her tone of voice had changed completely from an immense anger to a welcoming soft tone. "Sydney, Sydney, Sydney. How did it come to this, huh? Why are we doing this?" I nervously pulled my gun from its holster. "Let's just stop this, OK? Come out to me." I wasn't stupid. "Sydney? Sydney!" she screamed with a pure rage. Her point of anger was my point of survival. I jumped to my feet and emptied a whole clip on her even though I knew the first shot had killed her. I went to check her pulse but there was no need but there was no need. I knew she was dead my the cold accusation of her eyes. This woman wasn't going to cause me any more pain. I fell to the floor and clutched the earth. I had won. It was finished.
