It was cold.
Mushra scowled, tightening the blanket he snitched from some random bystander around his thin shoulders. His breath came out in soft puffs, and he shivered despite the thick wool covering his body. Stupid fall. Stupid fall, almost winter. Stupid him for being a Fire Enterran and not boding well in chilly weather. Stupid…everything.
Bah.
He tipped his head back, careful not to loose his balance on the branch he currently occupied, and blinked at the heavy cloud covering above. It'd probably snow soon, he mused. Great. That meant Sago would no doubt plague him with snow and ice every chance he got, and Kutal would…do whatever Cat Enterrans did during winter. Probably eat food and find people to torment.
And Yakumo…
The scowl softened somewhat.
Yakumo would probably love the snow…would probably make snowmen and snow angels and smile in that happy, innocent way of hers…
Something rustled behind him.
"Gah!" he squawked, just barely holding onto the tree with one hand and catching his beloved blanket with the other. Pulling himself upright, he turned around, ready to blow seven different kinds of hell on whoever was stupid enough to scare him while he was thinking…
When blue eyes, clear and bright and concerned, gazed at him from a branch below.
"I…I'm sorry!" Yakumo fidgeted, blushing while looking away. "I didn't mean to scare you! I just…you looked cold, and lonely, so I…"
Mushra stared at her in astonishment. A scarf and pair of mitts were clutched tightly in her hands, and a large coat was tucked underneath her arm. Did she climb all the way up here, risking life and limb on a very unreliable tree, just to give him something to keep warm…?
"Those…are for me?" he asked, gesturing towards the mitts. She smiled at him, a miniature sun in the dark of the night. "Yes. Even Fire Enterrans should stay warm when winter is on its way." She contemplated for a moment, then giggled. "Especially Fire Enterrans."
Something warm bubbled inside, and he reached out a hand to help her up beside him. After he happily tugged on the mittens and wrapped the scarf tightly around his neck ("Careful, you'll choke!"), they sat together in silence, watching Sago and Kutal try to set up camp and fail miserably. Mushra smiled, nuzzling deeper into his cocoon of warmth.
Sometimes things aren't so cold when you have a friend with you to share the warmth.
AN: Jesus, how long has it been since I last wrote fanfics? O_O Ages, ages. I especially haven't touched Shinzo in awhile. Why has thou forsaken me, old favorite fandom of mine? Nergh...
ANYWHO...A fluffy friendly drabble between the two main characters of the entire series. Go figure. I must say, I have improved in writing tremendously these past...years? I sure as hel-heck don't know. RAWR.
Friendliness for some, Mushra/Yakumo for others (if you SQUINT REAL HARD...65 DEGREES TO THE LEFT...THERE)...Yup.
