Disclaimer-The characters are not mine, they are JK Rowlings, and she can
keep them, I'd screw them up bad. But Jacob is mine, and I hope I didn't
screw him up. And the plot is mine too. There is a Author Note at the end!
The curse that the man had used so many times had now come back and hit him. He knew the man behind tha mask, but he showed no recognition. Better to die this way. Avara Kedavra was much easier. And considerably less painful, emotional and physically.
The man fell to the ground, and silently considered his life. His brother was dead, but he shed no tears. The man was pure evil, and yet it had only taken a boy and an extrorindarly amount of love to defeat Tom Riddle.
Jacob Riddle looked around painfully. This was his debt, to die fighting the evil he in part had created. He had knocked a redhaired woman out of the way of the Killing Curse, how clichè that was. She had gotten away, not realizing he had been hit. And he did not regret that moment, and he never would.
Breath came to him in short, uneven and painful gasps. He had no wife, no family to think of in his last moments, his brother was to thank. But he would not dwell on the past. 'No one here would know my name,' he thought to himself. 'How many others are there here, dying who have families in other countries who will never see their loved one again?'. He had nothing to live for, but everything to fight for.
Jacob struggled to his knees, and felt death's cold tough on his heart. 'Not yet' he begged, 'Let me protect one more life, mine is gone.' His efforts were futile, he realized, and fell back down. "If my life can be accounted for in one day, let this day be the one." He whispered to no one.
Let no one say Jacob Riddle was afraid of death. He did not welcome it, but accepted it. He had a new journey now. Let it begin.
* Harry Potter levitated bodies from the field into coffins. He recogized a few, some more painful to bear than others. He had seen Ginny, held her in his arms. She had told him about the man who had saved her life, how he had told her to go, assured her he was right behind her, but she didn't look back, and he had not followed. Harry levitated a man who looked...peaceful, and content with his end. He had obviously been hit by the Killing Curse, but it had only grazed him. What pain it must've been. Tears sprung to his eyes. All these people had died, and why? The evil was gone, the victory won, but no victory could be sweet. There were children crying, wives without husbands, and vice versa.
As the sun dawned in the eastern sky, a brilliant shade of red, an answer dawned on Harry. These people gave up their lives for his children, and their children's children. It was love that made them give it all up for others. He would honor their memories, and wipe the Earth of the evil, so he could die in peace, like this man.
"Thank you." He whispered softly, "Whoever you are, thank you."
A/N- my first fic and my first one shot. This has been rolling around in my head for a couple days, and I was spurred on by theunluckymagician's one shot, and her two excellent storied that are highly reccommended. Anyway, thanks for reading, and if you like it, tell me! Then I'll do more, cause this was oodles of fun.
