Myrtle's Acquaintance
Myrtle sat gloomily on a windowsill in the boys' bathroom. Of course, it wasn't entirely appropriate for her to be sitting there, seeing as she was a girl. 'It's not like anyone needs to know,' she told herself, swinging her transparent legs back and forth. 'I suppose I could just jump into a toilet if anyone comes in. Oh, my afterlife is rubbish!' she wailed suddenly.
She was so caught up in her crying that she didn't notice a tall, blond boy with a hollowed face come in. She gave a sudden gasp and shrank back when she saw him. He paid her no attention, however, muttering to himself.
'Bloody infernal cabinet!' he grumbled, filling the basin with water. Then, without warning, tears started to fall from his eyes.
'Why are you crying?' Myrtle asked nosily. He gave a gasp and turned sharply.
'Oh, it's just you,' he said, relieved. 'I thought you haunted the girls' bathroom.'
'Why are you crying?' Myrtle repeated, staring at him intently.
'It's none of your business,' the boy snapped, turning back to the sink. He scrubbed his hands and splashed some water on his face.
'You said something about a cabinet,' Myrtle said, swooping over and sitting lightly on the tap. 'Can I help you?'
The boy sneered. 'You're a ghost! How could you help me?' Then he changed track again. 'No one can help me.' He started to cry again. Myrtle placed her ghostly hand on his pale one.
'I wish I could,' she said, for once not thinking of herself.
The boy grunted and pulled his hand back. He drained the water out of the basin. Myrtle continued to watch him as he picked up his bag and turned. As he was leaving, he turned back.
'I'll come back,' he told her. 'I promise.' And with that, he pushed the door open, leaving Myrtle alone once more.
