Disclaimer: I don't own Les Miserables. This is an AU story because Enjolras and the rest of Marius's friends survived the barricades.
The room was bright. The music was loud. It was a celebration. Soon Marius would no longer be a single man. He was getting married and he and his friends were celebrating. Cosette was celebrating with her friends. It was a wonderful day to be sure. The party lasted past midnight. When it finally stopped Enjolras walked home with Marius. They chatted on the way there.
"You must be excited," Enjolras said
"Absolutely," Marius replied, "I love Cosette. She is the half of me that makes me whole."
"Marius," Enjolras said, "Marriage is a wonderful thing. It also means you are going to be the leader of your household now."
"JUST A MINUTE," Marius said, "Cosette is my equal so I don't see why I am the leader of my household."
"I understand that," Enjolras said, "But I want to talk with you about what it means to be a leader."
"I've studied the word in Law school," Marius said, "I think I know what it means."
"I'm not talking about the definition of the word," Enjolras replied, "I'm referring to the action of being a leader." Marius groaned to himself. He loved his friend but the man could lecture about anything and found it to be one of his favorite hobbies.
"I know how to be a leader," Marius said.
"Not quite," Enjolras said, "Being a leader means to lead. It means to uplift those who are you are in charge of or teaming up with."
"Do I LOOK like my grandfather," Marius asked annoyed, "I would never do anything but."
"Marius it isn't only you and Cosette. I understand she is your equal but you may have a son one day."
"Or a daughter," Marius said.
"All the more reason to listen to me," Enjolras said, "It is far more challenging to be a girl in this world then it is to be a boy. Girls need their mother and their father to lead them. They need to be shown guidance. You must understand that you have to be leader and friend at the same time. You need to lead and to love. It's not as easy as you might think."
"I KNOW EVERYTHING YOU ARE TELLING ME," Marius yelled.
"See there's an example of something you should never do," Enjolras said.
"What?"
"Raise your voice," Enjolras said
Marius shook his head laughing.
"I'm raising my voice because you are telling me things I already know. I know that as a husband I'm going to have responsibilities. I know that when I become a father I'm going to have responsible. Frankly Enj I learned how to be a leader from watching you. You led everyone from the barricades to safety. You were both friend and firm. You ensured proper discipline when needed without acting in any way other then encouraging. At the same time you made your expectations clear. You got us through the war alive."
