A/N: This is just a short one-shot about Wally West. I hope you really enjoy reading it.
Wally West was raised to be a good, proper young man. He was raised to respect his elders, to hold the door for ladies, and to have good manners in general. Every Sunday morning, the West family would dress their best and head to church. Wally would listen, respectively, through Sunday School and the pastor's sermon. By the time Wally was ten, he had Jesus Loves Me and hundred million other little songs memorized. At the end of his tenth summer, Wally had gained his super speed and was a man of science.
The first Sunday after Wally came back from a summer spent with his Aunt Iris and Uncle Barry, he was slow to put on his khaki pants. "Mom, do I have to go to church?"
His parents were both in the living room, waiting for him to finish dressing. His mother looked shocked, "Why? Why wouldn't you want to?"
"Well, it's not as if God is real. There's zero scientific proof."
Mary stared at him, horrified. Then, at once, she started sobbing. Wally started to rush to her, but Rudy sent him an angry glare that stopped the boy in his tracks. Rudy hugged his wife and supported her as they walked to back to their bedroom. Wally stood in the middle of the living room, petrified, for over twenty minutes, before retreating back to his bedroom.
None of their family went to church that week. Mary was too distressed, Rudy too angry, and it wasn't like Wally was going to go himself. The family was so regular in their attendance that the pastor called them after the service to make sure everything was alright.
Next Sunday, Wally woke up and rolled out of bed, mentally preparing himself for church, only to notice that his bedroom clock showed the time as eleven-thirty; his parents had left for church without waking him up.
Wally was eating breakfast when his parents arrived back home. Mary had a strained smile on and wished her son a faint good morning. Rudy was fighting a scowl. As he passed Wally, he leaned down and whispered, "She told the pastor that you were sick." Wally hid in his room the rest of the day.
He avoided all religious related conflict with his parents by spending the weekends with his Aunt Iris and Uncle Barry. His aunt and uncle rarely went to church on days that weren't holidays, and when they did, they normally went to a Unitarian church, which was very different from his parent's Methodist church. What is more, with the help of his uncle, Wally became better at controlling his powers.
Whenever Wally returned from his aunt's and uncle's, usually not until late Sunday night. His mother looked sad. He rarely noticed; whenever he did, he usually held it to be a trick of the light, because the next morning, she was his cheerful, loving mother again.
One weekend, neither Barry nor Iris could stay in town. Barry was off on some long mission as the Flash, and Iris was reporting on an important world event. Wally woke up Sunday morning to his mother's gentle touch.
"Wally. Your father and I are getting ready for church. You don't have to go, of course, but I thought I would let you know." Mary tried very hard to keep to keep her face blank; however, Wally saw the same emotion in her eyes that he did in the hostages he rescued as Kid Flash. He saw hope. In a flash, his mind rewound to all of his mother's sad Sunday smiles, to the terrible day, almost two years ago, during which he had proclaimed the nonexistence of God.
Wally scrambled out of bed and into a standing position. "Of course I'll come, Mom."
Mary grinned and hugged her son. "Oh Wally! The pastor will be so happy to see you again. It's been such a long time since you came."
Wally smiled back at his mother, glad that she was happy.
