It's the last day of school and everyone is bored, restless.
To settle his nerves over his excitement of being free from the rigors of structured learning, Edd sat down at the piano in the music room and played a few runs as plans of days on end in the archives of the library in downtown Pear City ran through his head.
Then Kevin came and sat next to him.
The dork and the quarterback had only been dating since the first of the year. Kevin had promised Nat and Nazz that his New Year's resolution would be to ask out the smart Ed after spending a good six months crushing on him from afar. Well, if you can call living across the street, "from afar."
Still, Kevin had a mountain of distrust, angst and general "what if's" and "why me's" to climb. Knowing someone practically your whole life is one thing. Getting to actually KNOW them was another.
And since last summer, Kevin had been trying to do just that. And he fell harder and harder for the ravenette everyday. By Thanksgiving, it was clear to everyone that he liked Edd. But neither boy made a move.
Until New Year's Eve.
Nazz's party was epic as always, but that kiss in the kitchen was even more so. Edd said that he was just fine helping Kevin with his New Year's resolution, but when Kevin showed him what the resolution was, all Edd could mutter was that they needed to make sure to schedule as much time as they could together to make sure Kevin stuck with it. Kevin scheduled a dozen more kisses in the next five minutes. Edd was early for each one.
Now it was May and nearly three months worth of learning about the history of his hometown loomed before him. As did picnic dates in the park and warm nights on Kevin's motorcycle to the frozen custard stand.
Double D couldn't wait.
"So, what's the plan, my man?," Kevin asked as he picked out the bass line to Chopsticks.
"I was thinking that we'd go home and grab a snack and then go see General Appleton's mansion," Edd replied.
The Union general was the founder of the most fruity named area in the state. But he had a love for roses and his estate was covered in them. Edd wanted to explore the gardens before it got too hot and today would be a perfect day to do so. As soon as the bell rang anyways.
"Sounds good."
"Hey! Gimme me a beat!"
Kevin and Edd looked up to see Nat dashing out of the closet the choir teacher kept the robes in. Both boys looked at each other and shrugged and Nazz grabbed her phone. Kevin plus Edd plus Nat always meant Instagram worthy shenanigans.
As the redhead and the quarterback started to play a two man duet of Heart and Soul, Nat eased his way into the camera frame twerking and waving his arm around. Edd didn't even look up because he didn't want to break his concentration. Kevin just shook his head.
Nazz only got about thirty seconds of video but it was enough. The three friends made great music together.
"Any plans?," she asked her friends as she posted the video to her Instagram account and then shared it across the rest of her other social media accounts.
"I've got a date," Kevin said with a wide smile and Edd went pink as he grinned.
"Lucky!," Nat pouted.
Kevin just shrugged as he smirked at his friend.
"Whatevs, Barr. Edd, hit me!," Nat said as he walked to the middle of the expansive class room.
Edd made a face before deciding to play Earned It by The Wknd.
"I can't dance to that!," Nat screamed at him. "Not alone anyways," he pouted.
Edd just shrugged as Kevin leaned his head on the smaller teen's shoulder and Edd and Nazz sang.
When the bell finally rang, the kids tore out of the school and Kevin was thrilled to start this summer hand in hand with the boy who stole his heart and soul.
