Law & Order is still not mine.

It had only been a few weeks after that senator was tried for murder and, after Jack McCoy was being hounded by the tabloids for who knows how long, the beat went on. How fast it took the beat to go on, however, inwardly amazed him to no end; he even forgot his name by now.

Even so, they had another murder case to work on. Chad Larson wasn't going to convict himself-at least, not willingly.

He walked out of the elevator, briefcase in one hand, helmet in the other. Sticking the helmet under his arm, he opened the door to his office, only to find Connie Rubirosa at his desk.

"Uh, Connie?" he asked, figuring this was a joke.

"Yeah?" she replied, not looking up from her paperwork.

"You mind explaining to me why you're sitting in my desk?"

She looked up. "Simple. This isn't your desk. At least, not anymore."

He stammered a bit before settling on a word: "What?"

"Go visit Branch's office," she told him. "Trust me; you'll get it."

"Arthur, you mind telling me what this is abo-" he began to say, only to notice that Arthur Branch was missing from his desk. A desk that, where it was normally cluttered from here to next week, was blank-save for the folded piece of paper on it.

He picked it up. Seeing that it was addressed to him, he read it:

"Dear Jack,

If you haven't noticed already, I resigned. I would've told you, but I just wanted to see you in an uncomfortable position. Believe me when I say that you'll get a lot of them.

Now, you may be wondering why someone else isn't sitting in that chair. Easy: You complained to me about me being too concentrated on being in office to do my job, I just wanted to see how you liked being in my position.

Have fun,

Arthur Branch"

Connie Rubirosa chuckled as she-and probably the new ADA-heard her boss from down the hall: "Oh, fuck me!"
