Prologue

The year is 2022.

6 years have passed since I killed Armstrong.

My war with the Private Military Companies has continued unabated since, and I retain no ties with my allies at Maverick. I have no idea what's happened to everyone. Courtney, Kevin, Doktor, Boris, George, Sunny, even Wolf. I have left them all behind in pursuit of this private war of mine.

As much as I hate to admit it, Armstrong had the right idea, looking to end this self-perpetuating cycle of war used as a business. But his methods would have led to the deaths of far too many innocents to count. So I had to stop him. As he himself said, I ensured that the status quo would continue on for at least a little while longer. But in the end, I knew he was right. These people are fighting for causes they don't believe in, conflicts that aren't theirs to fight in the first place, yet many of them have no choice. It's the only way they can make a living in a lot of cases. It's sickening, so fucking sickening to see these people forced to commit what are essentially war crimes just for the sake of a citizenship, or a surgery for a loved one, or who knows what else.

I haven't been resting on my laurels for the last 6 years either. I have infiltrated and toppled many PMCs in the last half decade. But for every one that I take down, more seem to pop up everywhere, like a hydra consisting of thousands of cyborgs. I may have taken out the big guns at World Marshal along with Desperado, but they were only two in a sea of countless PMCs. A small blip on a massive map, insignificant in the overall.

Regardless, I'm not slowing down. I have no way of telling just how deep this rabbit hole may go, but I'm determined to end this Business of War, like Armstrong was. It'll take longer, but I have plenty of time. As a cyborg, I won't age, and as long as I stay in top form, I won't die.

My best hope is to keep this private war private. The problem is that PMCs have begun warring against each other. Some over money, others over turf. If this fighting grows to a larger scale, it could mean the deaths of thousands, or worse, millions. If they start figuring out that I'm taking down their competition, these PMCs may start fighting more adamently for their turf, and it could turn particularly nasty the larger this scale of conflict becomes.

Regardless, I will not waver or back down. I am Lightning, the Rain Transformed. And I WILL end the business of war even if it kills me.

My name is Raiden, and this is where my story continues.
