"Riley, why are you insecure?"
They were standing in the hallway, just the two of them because Maya had detention and Farkle had his own project to work on. So there stood Lucas and Riley as she gathered her things. The question had been at the forefront in Lucas's mind for quite some time, since he just couldn't figure it out.
"I don't know. I just am," Riley replied, a bit confused by the question. She shut her locker and turned to Lucas.
"Well you shouldn't be," Lucas blurted before he could stop himself. The brunette furrowed her brow, making her look even more adorable.
"Why's that?" Riley asked, tilting her head. The Texan boy felt nervous. Suddenly, his palms were sweaty, his heartbeat quickened, and he began tapping his fingers on his leg, a nervous habit of his. He could not answer. Shrugging wasn't an option.
"Because."
"Because why?" Her insecurity was acting up, Lucas could tell. Now he had to answer, to spare her the pain of trying to figure it out in her cute head. He pushed that thought out of his head, and blinked, trying to regain focus. Riley was staring at him, waiting for an answer.
"Because," Lucas said. His mouth was so dry. Why was it so dry? "Because you're beautiful and funny and fun and uh, a really great friend." He smiled at her, and she grinned back a grin so warm it melted his heart. God, he had sounded so stupid. But she was smiling, blushing even, so she clearly wasn't offended or grossed out or-
An eavesdropping Mr. Matthews flung his classroom door open and glared daggers at Lucas. "FRIAR!" Lucas's eyes went wide. He shot his crush a wink before he took off, running from Riley's crazed father.
Madeline: Short, yes, but super fluffy!
Lucas: *out of breath* Review...favorite...but don't...follow the story...because...it's a one-shot…
Mr. Matthews: FRIAR!
Lucas: Bye! *runs away*
Madeline: *pouts* Hey! That's my line!
Riley: *giggles** He thinks I'm cute…
Madeline: Bye!
