Neville had been looking everywhere for Luna, but she was nowhere to be found. Ever since he'd returned to attend his seventh year for real (the previous year hadn't involved much schooling for him with all the constant chaos) they'd barely had time to see each other, even if they were dating. Now it was a cold Saturday morning in the middle of December, the ground was covered in snow, and he, Neville Longbottom, was looking for Luna Lovegood.
Suddenly, he had an idea.
He walked into the Forbidden Forest, which he didn't fear anymore in the slightest, and headed for the home of the Thestrals. Luna loved them more than any other magical creature, even the Wrackspurts she so loved to point out in people's heads. Nearly everyone in their seventh year and those returning to complete their own seventh year could see the Thestrals now, including all of the teachers. The death toll at the Battle of Hogwarts several months ago had been devastating.
As he suspected, he found Luna in the Thestrals' corner of the woods, making snow angels with her eyes closed and letting the light snow fall on her face and in her wavy blonde hair. She looked so peaceful, which she rarely did these days.
The past year had been a difficult one for the editor's daughter. First she'd had to put up with the Carrows' wrath the year before, then she'd been kidnapped and held captive in Malfoy Manor for quite some time, and she was still having nightmares about the horrors of the Battle of Hogwarts.
Neville opened his mouth to say hello, but Luna, eyes still closed, spoke first. "Hello, Neville," she said in her soft voice.
"How did you know it was me?" he asked.
"Oh I just knew," Luna replied dreamily. She sounded like her normal self, the way she'd been before the Carrows had taken over Hogwarts.
"You must be freezing," said Neville, sounding concerned.
Luna shook her head and kept making snow angels. "No, I'm okay," she said.
Neville smiled, even though he knew Luna couldn't see him. "Well I'm not going to let you have all the fun by yourself," he said. He plopped down in the snow next to her and began making snow angels with the person he loved more than anyone else in the world.
"Luna?" said Neville after several long moments of comfortable silence.
"Hm?" replied Luna.
"I love you."
Luna leaned over and kissed his cheek. When she lay back down in the snow, she took his hand, and they just lay there together, making snow angels in the fresh winter snow.
