Megumi sat staring blankly out the window, desperately trying to gain control of her thoughts that were filled with images of her relationship with Sanosuke Sagara. They pulled out memories of his gentle touch, rough voice and deep, beautiful eyes…

The pretty doctor pulled herself from the road to self pity she was traveling. It had been for the best. He was a wanted man, not safe in Japan. He also had such a free spirit. She couldn't hope to hold him long in one place. Loving someone meant wishing for their happiness. At least that was Megumi's definition. Did he realize how much unhappiness he caused her by leaving though. Did he not love her?

Mentally slapping herself, Megumi focused her eyes on the book on the table in front of her, willing herself to slip into the alternate reality. Sano was gone. They wouldn't build a life together.

Megumi forced her mind to form pictures of the settings the book described, of the characters and such. Yet still memories of her time with Sano slipped in.

The image of his leaving would always be remembered vividly. His soft kiss and slow, lazy smile as he promised to return before he jumped in the boat and set out. How badly she had wanted to stop him. How much more badly did she want to join him in it, to travel with him one adventure after another. But she had obligations.

Throwing the book violently at the wall, Megumi stood up quickly. Did he seriously think of coming back? It had already been 4 years. Had he forgotten? Was she replaced?

Megumi sunk to the floor sobbing. Crying was now a huge part of her life. Her empty, lonely life. Why did he leave? Why did he not come back? Why can't she forget him?
