The Masks We Wear

Chapter 1: Detention Number 1

From her seat she could see him clearly. He was bent over a cauldron, pale blue smoke mingling with his long black hair. Hermione Granger found it strangely intriguing. For the last forty-five minutes she had been sitting quietly. He had yet to speak to her. She silently reached into her book bag and pulled out an enormous book. She also took out a quill and notebook.

*As long as he's ignoring me, I might as well put this detention to use. * she thought. She quickly became engrossed in her book. It was extracurricular reading for potions. She hoped the information would be helpful on the NEWTS, which were fast approaching. She charmed the book to levitate in front of her while she took notes. With the book hovering in front of her, she failed to notice that Professor Snape was now staring at her. She didn't see how his eyes narrowed when he first realized she was there. Or how he opened his mouth to sneer a reprimand at her for doing homework during detention, only to abruptly close it when he recognized the book she was reading: "Powerful yet Practical Potions". A book he read on a fairly regular basis. Hermione also missed the small smile that played at his lips. It quickly disappeared and he glanced at the clock, nine o'clock. Her detention had been scheduled to begin at seven.

He cleared his throat loudly. Her head shot up, eyes wide. The book landed with a thud on the table in front of her. She quickly turned her eyes toward the book.

"Miss Granger, you may leave, but this detention must be rescheduled."

"But.you were.I."

"You were doing whatever you pleased." He had cut her off mid-stutter, and her anger had flashed brightly in her eyes. "You will report her tomorrow after dinner, at eight o'clock."

"But tomorrow's Saturday."

"Yes, and I'm sure you can drag yourself from the library for a few hours."

"Yes, Professor." Her shoulders sagged. She slowly gathered her things and headed for the door. As she grasped the door handle, she heard him softly speak.

"Oh and Miss Granger.I am curious as to what your opinions are regarding that particular text. Do come prepared for a discussion."

She almost smiled, but she caught herself. Then she headed off for the Gryffindor Common Room. She hurried out of the dungeons, but slowed upon reaching friendlier surroundings. Professor Snape was at the front of her mind. He never ceased to confuse her. One moment he was stern and foreboding, the next he was academically approachable.

Author's Notes: I didn't realize how short this chapter was until I actually typed it. The next chapter will be longer; that is, if anyone is interested in another chapter. I love reviews!!!
