The food had been delicious, the conversation had been comical, and the atmosphere had been incredibly pleasant, but when the meal was done and Sigrun and Mikkel went to reached for their wallets both found that they had accidentally left them at home.
"Shit!" exclaimed Sigrun, "what are we supposed to do now?"
"Dine and dash?" suggested Mikkel.
Suddenly Sigrun face lit up, "Wait No! I've got a better idea!"
Sigrun grabbed the leftover cherry stem from her ice cream sunday and started twisting it into a loop.
"Sig what on earth are you doing?"
"You'll see! Just play along okay Mikkel?"
"Fine."
A few seconds later Sigrun jumped up from her chair, brandishing her loopy cherry stem like a weapon, before dramatically swooping to to the floor in a kneel.
Mikkel was just forming a questioning look on his face when Sigrun asked a him a question in a loud tv announcer voice, "Mikkel, would you make me the happiest woman in the world and marry me?"
Mikkel could feel every eye in the restaurant trained on the two of them , so he quickly plastered a smile on his face before stumbling to his feet and pulling Sigrun up into a bear hug, "Is that even a question Sig? Of course I will!"
Within seconds the restaurant was filled with applause.
The waiter walked up behind them and picked up the check folder, "well," he said, "I guess you won't be needing this."
Sigrun gave the man her best shocked face,"oh, we won't?"
"Nope!" he said, giving them the obligatory customer service smile, "if you get engaged here you eat free."
Mikkel gave the man a warm smile, "Well thank you very much," he turned back to Sigrun, "well then dear, why don't we go home and celebrate?"
"yes, why don't we?"
The two picked up their coats and left.
The second the restaurant door swung shut behind them both Sigrun and Mikkel let out a sigh of relief. Then Sigrun started chortling.
"I-I can't believe tha-that really wor-worked-"
Mikkel began to chuckle as well, "I- I know"
They laughed their way back to their cars.
