The night was warm, with a hint of a breeze. A thin sliver of moon shed light onto the city, and a dark hedgehog walking away out of the city.
Shadow the Hedgehog walked out of the city, heading for a bridge outside the city. He walked to the middle of the bridge and then stopped and looked out over the river.
This world doesn't need me anymore. I saved it twice…only because I tried to destroy it twice. Sonic can protect the world. It doesn't need me anymore.
Shadow climbed onto the bridge railing. Maria, I'll be with you soon. Then he jumped.

Rouge the Bat ran down the direction of the bridge, where she'd Shadow go. She arrived in time to see him jump.
"No!" For the third time in her adult life, the mask of cold indifference she wore broke.
Shadow couldn't die. She didn't know what she'd do if he died.
She spread her wings and jumped after him.
XXX
Shadow was plummeting headfirst towards the water when he heard his name.
"Shadow!"
He looked up and saw Rouge. She was reaching towards him, tears streaming from her eyes as she tried to catch him.
Aided by her wings, she caught up to him and wrapped her arms around his chest, refusing to let go. She did not try to fly, she simply clung to him.
Shadow looked down and saw that the water was now only a few feet away. He wrapped his arms around her and shouted, "Chaos Control!"
They reappeared on the riverbank, both on their knees, Rouge still clinging to Shadow. She spoke first.
"Shadow…I…you." She tried to say something, then gave up and slapped him across the face. She buried her face in his chest and started to cry.
"Don't ever try to kill yourself again, Shadow." She sobbed. "Just don't.
Unsure of what to do next, Shadow put his arms around the sobbing bat.
"I won't, Rouge; I won't." He promised.
And he really meant it.
I'm alive, cause…
On the way down, I saw you
And you saved me from myself
And I won't forget the way you loved me
On the way down, I almost fell right through
But I held onto you
