In a Different Light
'I'm a vampire,' he said, his eyes turned upon her. Strange, inhuman eyes. Frightened eyes. At her initial shock, her throat had closed up and her eyes were wide in fear, but as she continued to stare at him she felt her panic slowly waning; because how could she remain scared of something when it was so clearly afraid of her? And those eyes, they were pleading with her; so much that she couldn't turn away from them. But what were they pleading for?
Almost mesmerized, she stretched her hand out towards him, carefully looking for his reaction as he watched how it slowly inched closer to him. Suddenly, he scrambled away from her, huddling against the pillar like a cornered animal. The movement startled her, causing her fear to flow back, and she jumped up, hastily pulling her hand back. Trembling, she balled her hand into a fist and cradled it against her chest, feeling the loud beating of her heart beneath her curled-up fingers. Then she watched him, as he huddled as far against the pillar as possible, body taut as a spring, arms drawn up and pressed tightly against his chest. The bag – of blood? – was still in his hands; more bags were on the table, red blood stuck to his chin, slowly dripping down…
It was too much for her to comprehend; she couldn't process it. Just the sight of that… that blood made her feel like she couldn't think, couldn't breath. She threw a quick glance at the door and then back at him, wondering fearfully what he'd do if she ran. Was she safe? But when she glanced back she saw that he hadn't even moved, that he just continued to crouch on the floor like a wounded animal. At that moment, her own terrified instincts finally won her internal shouting match and she hurried out of the room without a backward glance, shaking with terror all the way to her car.
She needed to get away, away from what she didn't understand; couldn't comprehend. Couldn't… love? She ran.
