Spoilers: Major spoilers for the season 2 finale, "Men in Shadows."
Disclaimer: I don't own Laramie, but can I have Jess Harper? Please?
A/N: As always, I thank my Lord Jesus Christ for his incredible mercy and grace and his many blessings. I would be utterly lost without him.
I hope you enjoy it, and please let me know what you think! :)
Slipping
He's slipping.
The first time it happens, that's all he's able to think about. He's slipping. Just a few short years ago, a shirttail kid like that would never have been able to wing him. The kid's gun wouldn't even have cleared the holster.
That knowledge hurts more than the furrow the bullet dug through his arm.
The kid won't be shooting anyone else now, though. He made sure of that…and he was justified. Just ask anyone watching on the street. (Dixie refuses to think about another shirttail kid, the one he spared who became as good a friend and trail partner as he's ever had.)
There's no way he could have let this kid go, not after he was hit. That would have made him look weak, and a man who's slipping…he can't afford that.
In the end, Dixie doesn't bother seeing a doc. He just patches himself up, makes his way to the nearest saloon, and orders a bottle of whisky. He tells himself that it's for the pain.
(And it is. Just not the one in his arm.)
