The stars were particularly bright and the moon was full. It led a sort of magical quality to the dark of night. It made her think dreams could really come true. She laughed to herself, her dreams had died a long time ago on a warm summery night. Nothing was going to come true for her. Her dream was long gone. As she wandered along the edge of the reservoir, she picked a wild lily that grew along the path and breathed in the scent. He knew lilies were her favorite flowers. She couldn't help but remember when he showed up at her door with a freshly picked handful of lilies and a small smile. She couldn't remember why she'd been mad at him in the first place, but she remembered the make-up after the fight. He handed her the flowers and she'd smiled and slipped her arms around his neck. When they kissed, any anger she'd had left disappeared as he pulled her closer. They made love right in the hallway, unable to wait, the scent of the lilies all around them. It was one of the few times he'd ever told her he loved her. He had whispered it into the curve of her neck as he moved inside of her, it had been one of the last times she could remember feeling that happy, that desperately in love. She wished she could forget the memories.
She let her tears fall, unchecked, down her cheeks. Her makeup was running and she looked awful, but she could have cared less for once. She tried to breathe and stop crying, but it didn't help. She could still smell the lilies on her hands, the memories on her skin, and the pain of losing it all.
