"Alright, last present!" Dave Rafter announced. "And I believe this is for Ruby! Aw, thanks, Grace!"

"You're welcome", Grace Barton cooed, tickling the just turned one year old's tummy. Ruby just giggled, as her older brother Ben tore into the present for her.

"How cute is this?" Ben wanted to know, tossing a multicoloured caterpillar toy, with 'Ruby Louise' across the body, into the air.

"Grace, thank you, it's gorgeous!" Julie Rafter cooed.

"Actually, that is not the last present". Jake, Grace's son, cleared his throat nervously. "Rach, this is for you".

Presenting his girlfriend with a large box, he watched her reaction, his lips turning up into a grin.

"Jake!" Rachel Rafter scolded. "I thought we discussed we weren't buying presents this year!"

"We discussed it… but you broke the rule first!" he protested. "Besides, you love presents!"

"Rachel loves presents", Nathan, Rachel's youngest brother, had the video camera out.

"Don't turn down a present, Rach", Alex Barton- the younger brother of Alex- agreed.

"Fine". Sighing, Rachel untied the ribbon Jake had spent so many hours trying to tie and lifted the lid. Upon seeing the contents, she broke into a grin. The box was completely full of candy canes, all different shapes and sizes, colours and smells. "Jake! What is all this?"

Jake shrugged, a small smile on his face. "You said candy canes are your favourite part of Christmas… I figured I'd get you something you like".

Pawing through the box, her heart almost stopped when she felt something that was definitely not a candy cane. "Jake!"

"Yes?"

"What is this?"

"A candy cane?" he said innocently, when she removed her hand from the box. The velvet box was, indeed, taped to a candy cane (and then unsuspiciously tied with ribbon).

"What is this?" Rachel's voice was several octaves higher, as she began to panic.

"A candy cane".

"I swear, Jake, you say 'candy cane' one more time…"

"Yes dear". Taking the candy cane from her hand, he removed the little velvet box and snapped it open. "Rachel Rafter, I love you, and no matter what you do, or what you say, I will always love you. Rach, will you marry me?"

"Yes", she whispered, leaning towards him and sealing the deal with a kiss.

He tasted like candy cane.
