Rei had never minded thunderstorms but had never really given them much thought either. Sure, he liked the way it sounded when it poured and the rain hit the roof in giant thuds. Or the sound of a big crack of lightning but it wasn't as if he loved them. Well, not until Nagisa came along. His feelings of them changed one rainy day in October when he was visiting home for a long weekend because there was a short break in university classes.
Rei was doing some light reading for college at his short table in his room with Nagisa laying his head in Rei's lap. Nagisa was absentmindedly playing with the hem of Rei's t-shirt when the unmistakeable sound of heavy rain hitting the roof sounded in their ears. Nagisa sat up promptly and walked over to the window and opened the curtain. Lo and behold it was pouring. Heavy dark clouds hung low on the horizon as the light outside was fading in the late afternoon. Rei turned his head toward the window.
"It's really coming down, isn't it?" He commented before turning back to his book.
"Yeah," Nagisa replied as he padded back over to Rei and plopped down next to him. He laid his head down on the table and turned his head to face Rei. He yawned as his eyes started to droop. "The rain always makes me so sleepy, Rei-chan."
"You can go nap on my bed if you prefer that to the hard table," Rei stated matter-of-factly.
"Come with meeeee," Nagisa whined pulling at Rei's sleeve.
"Nagisa-kun I need to finish this before I head back to university on Monday," Rei said with a sigh already knowing Nagisa was going to protest.
"But Rei-chan you're so fast at reading you will be able to finish it tomorrow!" Nagisa complained. "Plus, you're going back to university in two days and we won't see each other until winter break!" Rei sighed heavily before closing his book.
"Oh alright then," Rei said as he stood up and walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge. Nagisa squealed in joy as he flung himself at Rei and tackled him onto the bed. Rei fell back with an oomph as Nagisa put his head against Rei's chest and draped his arm over Rei's torso. Nagisa snuggled closer and closed his eyes contentedly as Rei circled his arms around Nagisa. Within minutes Nagisa was snoring softly.
Rei smiled to himself as he looked at Nagisa. He might have complained about having to stop reading but he really did enjoy snuggling with Nagisa like this. Being away for months away from the bubbly boy really irritated Rei in ways he couldn't understand. It was like he couldn't smile as much without Nagisa there cracking jokes and laughing wholeheartedly as always.
Rei closed his eyes as well and listened to the rain pounding against the roof. For some reason it matched Nagisa's soft snores and Rei couldn't help but feel as if this was the happiest he had felt since he entered university. He pulled Nagisa closer and rested his head against the top of Nagisa's. He inhaled softly and smelled the strawberries of Nagisa's shampoo.
This was his happy place, he thought to himself. If there was such an illogical thing as heaven this would be it. He slowly drifted off as he listened to the rain patter against the roof and the soft snores of the person he cherished the most next to him.
