Disclaimer: No Avatar is not mine, honestly would anyone think that?
Author's note: Okay I just managed to watch all the Avatar episodes in one week and before you ask: yes I have a life, but I was ill and needed a new series to obsess over and Avatar just has too many Star Wars elements for me to ignore it. The point is, it gave me a lot of ideas for fanfictions, although I have no time to write them, and one of them was this little piece. I wondered why Zuko would be so stupid to trust Azula twice, when he is shown as a child in one of the episodes telling himself that Azula always lies. So this is what came out of it, I hope you enjoy it!

Azula's lies
Zuko knows when Azula is lying, he isn't that stupid and he is probably the only one who can tell when Azula is lying and when not, but he is still blind enough to trust her anyways. She is his sister after all and even if he means nothing to her, he still loves her.
So he knows he shouldn't trust Azula when she tells him that he can go home with her, that their father will accept him. He shouldn't have trusted her the first time and certainly not the second time she told him. Although this time she means it and if he helps her he can go home again, but the price is high.
But Zuko is tired: tired of running away, tired of fighting and tired of seeing his life being ruined every time it seems to finally get better. He is tired of being away from home and so he accepts Azulas offer, even if the price is too high and even if he doesn't know what she wants to accomplish with this. He knows she already has Ba Sing Se under her control and that she can take on the Avatar on her own, so there is no need for her to ask him to join her, unless she needs him as a pawn in one of her many games. A part of him, a tiny part, but nevertheless a powerful part inside him, wants to believe that she wants him back as a brother and like always he is going to listen to it, because he hopes that maybe somehow, miraculously, this part is proven right. His mind tells him that this will never happen, but his heart just seems blind in this respect.
Zuko knows that Azula doesn't always lie, although he tells himself that, and that just makes it harder to ignore her offer.
Azula doesn't always lie, but every time she doesn't she tells terrible things that Zuko doesn't want to believe, but knows anyways that they are true, like that his father would kill him without hesitation.
When Azula lies, she tells him all the things he wants to hear, everything he wishes for, like that he can go home and father will accept him.
Azula is good at lying, but sometimes the line between her lies and the truth blur and that is what makes it even harder for Zuko not to trust her when he shouldn't. Because sometimes Azula tells him terrible things and she is lying and then she truly looks like a monster. But sometimes she tells him things he likes to hear and he knows she is telling the truth and when she does she looks like their mother.
This is why he still trusts her even when she is lying, because he hopes that Azula has inherited more from their mother than just her looks.
