Disclaimer: I do not own Jonny Quest or related characters.
A/N: So, I'm having a little trouble with my big project so I'm taking a little break from it and turning to something else. Of course it had to be father/son fic with Race and young Jonny. This takes place not long after my other story Courage though I do not think it is necessary to read that one first.
"Race?" Hearing the quiet voice, Race looked to the doorway of his bedroom and found Jonny standing there. The eight-year-old's azure eyes shimmered with tears the boy was trying desperately not to shed. The bodyguard would guess a nightmare had been the cause of the boy's fears.
"Jonny, you alright?" Race sat up slowly, doing his best not to wince when his injured side protested the movement.
"I ha-had a bad d-dream." The boy mumbled as he ventured further into the room. "C-can I stay with you t-tonight?"
Race honestly wasn't very surprised. Given the attempted kidnapping that had happened a few days ago it was understandable that the boy would have nightmares. "'Course, kiddo."
Jonny climbed up onto the bed, crawling under the covers as Race slowly lay down again. "D-does it hurt?" The eight-year-old asked quietly.
"A little." Race admitted. Though the would-be kidnapper had failed to stab him, he'd been left with a bad gash in his side that had required stitches. "But it isn't so bad."
"D-dose it ever s-scare you th-that you could g-get h-hurt?" Jonny questioned.
Race shook his head. "No. It never has, why?"
"Just w-wondering." Jonny answered. It was quiet for a moment then the boy asked, "Race?"
"Hm?"
"What are you afraid of?"
Some part of Race's pride demanded he answer "nothing", but the bodyguard knew that would be a lie. Sighing he answered, "Losing my family."
"You mean Jessie and Estella?" Jonny asked, no doubt thinking of the two he had met for the first time a few months ago.
"You forgot two people kiddo." Race said.
"I did?" Jonny sounded rather confused.
"You and your dad are part of my family now too." Race answered.
"We are?" The kid still sounded confused, "But we're not related."
"You don't have to be related to be family, Jonny. Family is made up of the people you care about, not just who you're related to." Race explained.
"Oh." Jonny murmured. He was quiet for a long moment then, "Race?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm glad I'm part of your family."
"So am I, Jonny."
