A/N: Wow. Never done anything for this fandom before. Beware of Kaiba OOC-ness, I may have overdone it a bit.
I'll Never Leave
All he felt was pain. The sensation of falling away from everything he knew and loved, of his spirit being ripped from within his body, was like going into 5 surgeries at once with no anesthetics. He felt helpless, unable to do anything to stop this pain. He wanted to scream, cry out for his brother, anything, but his body was numb, useless. This wasn't supposed to be happening…this wasn't normal…this wasn't REAL!
Mokuba jerked himself awake, ran out of the bedroom and pulled open the toilet in the nearest bathroom, retching into it violently. Once done, he rested his head against the cold toilet seat. He couldn't believe how impossibly weak he was that he was still having nightmares about what happened all the way back in Duelist Kingdom. The memories of not having a body, of being unable to help Seto, of being unable to stop the pain, were unbearable.
"Mokuba? What's going on?" said a voice. He raised his head weakly, and saw his brother, his Seto, standing there in a deep blue bathrobe with a concerned look on his face. In a few quick strides he was kneeling beside the younger Kaiba. "Did something happen?"
The dark-haired child couldn't take it any more. He flung himself into his brother's arms, sobbing. "I'm so sorry, Seto," he whispered between his tears, "I'm just so weak. I never help or protect you like I should! I'm sorry!" He buried his face in Seto's shoulder, clinging to him like a lifeline.
Seto, completely taken aback by this sudden display of emotion, was at a loss as to his next move. He had trained himself over the years to show as little emotion as possible, but a small voice in the back of his mind was telling him to handle this situation with a delicate hand. He tenderly – albeit a little awkwardly – lifted Mokuba into his lap and wrapped his arms around the younger Kaiba's slight frame, murmuring, "It's all right, Mokuba. Everything's going to be okay. I'm not going anywhere. I promise."
"I'm gonna protect –" Mokuba started, but Seto placed a long finger against his brother's lips.
"Mokuba, it's my job to protect you, not the other way around. I'm not going to make the mistake of losing you again." He gently stood up, still holding Mokuba, and returned to his own bedroom. He tucked his brother under the covers, stripped down to his pajama bottoms, and slid into the bed beside Mokuba.
"I'll never leave you, Mokuba," Seto whispered, wrapping his brother in his strong arms once again and pulling him close.
"Promise?" Mokuba asked drowsily, the gentle rhythm of Seto's beating heart lulling him to sleep.
"I promise." Seto smiled down at his brother, and they both fell asleep, a tender mass of love amidst a chaotic world.
