Neji sat alone on the entrance steps to the Hyuga home. The air was brisk and damp, like how the air seems to be after it rains. Neji shivered and pulled his jacket closer to his body. The street in front of the house was empty, ghost town empty. Neji looked back at the house, it was silent. You could only hear the rain dripping of the pagoda like roof of the dojo. He looked up at the sky. It was day, but the sky was a dull grey. It was early. No sound could be heard in either direction. Neji stood and walked down the cobblestone sidewalk that lines the house. His steps to have an increased volume compared to when the streets are busy and the house awake. Neji thought someone inside the house would wake up for sure. Neji stopped to listen to the open air. No sound had been transmitted though or around the house, not a russle or a creak of the old floor boards eaten away by time. Assured by this silence he continued. "Was everyone in Konoha asleep?" thought Neji.
Something caught Neji's eye as he turned the corner, shaded by a lushesly full tree; it was a swift, subtle, and awkward movement. As if a rat or mouse had tried to flee just before getting caught shifting through garbage. Neji leaned closer to the sighting. Air brushed against Neji's face. He kneeled down and squinted. The dark had now surrounded Neji, he pressed one palm against the wall. Neji reached out to try and hold the object making such a disturbance. Neji's hand brushed against the object, it was trembling and soft. He grasped it softly and pulled it into the light. It was a bird. A small bird with a belly the color of crimson red. Neji smiled.
"What are you doing here?" He whispered petting the bird softly on the back. Neji looked at the bird intentiveley. The bird wiggled its wing and tweeted in pain.
"You're aren't you? Come on, let's go." Neji said, walking back to the house.
Neji entered his room, quietly, making sure no one would hear him. Neji, still holding the little bird, placed it on his bed. The bird was cold and didn't want to leave Neji's warmth from his arms. The bird hopped back into Neji's arms.
"Oh you…" Neji said, holding the little bird close, almost lovingly. The bird gave off a small tweet while Neji began to sit down on his bed.
"I wonder, where did you come from? I mean… where do you belong?" Neji said before looking down at the bird. It was sleeping. Neji sighed, put the bird on his bed and stood.
"I would be a trerrible parent… I am apparently boring, so boring a put a bird to sleep. God." Neji hung his head.
"He is so cute… or is it a she? I shouldn't care it's a bird." Neji said. "His wing looks bad, maybe it's broken. Poor guy." Neji walked out of his room checked the hell way for anyone. Not a soul in sight. Neji turned and looked at the bird.
"Okay, you can stay here…. For now."
