Tag to Friendly Fire(6.2)
In this episode David, Colby and Nicki place bets on who can find a date by the end of the week. David and Colby shrug off Nicki's challenges, saying they "are married to the job".
You are smart, figure out why that is important.
Short disclaimers as I fear the author's note will be longer than the story: I don't own Numb3rs and I don't really think law enforcement agents are date repellent.
Nicki had to wait alone in the bar for awhile, hating the fact that David and Colby had decided to be late. Finally, they had showed up...with their dates. Nicki had seen these women before; they were actors, which was at least a little bit weird, but what did she care. She had brought a professional basketball player she had to convince to come with her, who she had never met before tonight and who she would probably never see again. So they continued to sit in the bar and have drinks, pretending that they actually had a life outside the FBI and that people would consider them datable. If any of them thought about this scene too much, it would be utterly depressing, but that is what alcohol is for. Nicki's basketball player talked about his job and managed to impress the heck out of David and Colby's dates, who were paying much more attention to him than they were David or Colby. Somehow, after about an hour, Nicki, David and Colby ended up on the same side of the table together, swapping stories and generally amusing themselves by watching their dates attempting to flirt with each other without being completely rude. They failed; they were being completely rude, but it was most the agents had laughed all week, so they let it continue.
Another hour passed and the three civilians had almost convinced Nicki, David and Colby to talk about work, something they had swore they would not do, when all three of their cell phones rang at the same time. They all grabbed their phones at the same moment and saw the message simultaneously.
"Don shot Fox".
"Who is Don and why did he shoot a fox?" one of the actors giggled.
The agents were suddenly somber, grabbing their jackets and quickly paying for their drinks. It may be their night off, technically, but crime kept happening. They were never really off duty especially with this case: FBI agents shooting FBI agents. They wanted to make sure they were there for Don, protect their own; no need for any other agents to be taken down by this mess.
"Where are you going?" the actors had finally caught on that the agents were leaving; they had had a lot to drink.
"Wait, hold on you're going too?" Nicki's date asked her. He had not picked her as the type to be overly committed to the job. At least he was hoping that.
"Sorry" she shouted as she started winding through the crowded bar. "I'm married to the job".
