Title: KIA
Summary: They say that freedom is never free. But there's one price Max isn't willing to pay. October Prompt response. Drabble. MA.
Spoilers: Set sometime after "Freak Nation."
Disclaimer: I don't own them, but I'm not giving up hope yet. There's still that kidnapping plan in the works…I mean, *clears throat* nope, they're not mine. ;)
A/N: The Lord is so incredibly kind and has inspired me like crazy lately. I can't believe I'm posting again already! To God be all the glory, honor, power, and praise. :)
A/N2: This is an answer to the October Prompts on Raising, for the drabble prompt "graveyard." They say a drabble can be defined as 100 or 200 words, and since this refused to stay at 100, lol, it's 200 words exactly. :)
I hope you enjoy it! :)
KIA
The battle had lasted three days, and there hadn't been a winner.
But TC was still theirs, and that was what really mattered. They'd fought hard to keep it, hadn't given up, and the Ordinaries had fallen back. It wasn't over, Max wasn't stupid enough to believe that, but for now, it was quiet, both sides reorganizing, gearing-up for the next round…and burying their dead.
Max stood silently in TC's makeshift graveyard, drawing her jacket tighter around her in a useless attempt to fight off the cold.
Her eyes settled on the rough marker a few feet away. She hadn't known any of the dead very well - and a not-so-small part of her was selfishly glad for that - but every loss still ate at her, sent guilt and failure reeling in her heart.
"It's not your fault," Alec's voice drifted over her shoulder.
"I convinced them to stay," she argued, shaking her head.
He didn't say anything else to that, just came closer, slipping his arms around her. And as Max settled against his chest to read the names of those they'd lost, she breathed a silent prayer that she'd never have to read Alec's name there, too.
