Maybe because it touched him when he first heard her say she loves the cat. And not just any other cat, but the cat of the zodiac. Him. Kyo Sohma. That if she could do anything to change anything that happened to the cat, she would. She would even happily change her birthday to be a cat.
Tohru never knew the impact of those words to Kyo. That this is the beginning. That this is the first that Kyo realized, that girls are wonderful. That they are not all like Kagura or Rin. That they could be so sweet, caring and selfless but utterly clumsy. But Kyo liked that about her. Her most endearing self had found her way to the cat's heart not just any other cat, but Kyo himself, in his true and human form. But surprisingly not even that cat knew that. Like Tohru, Kyo didn't realized what he truly feels for his angel but not because he had never been in love. But he always has a way of disguising what he truly feels for Tohru, and the Tohru had to decipher his moods and his actions, and most of the time she got it wrong. It took him quite a long time to realized, yes, he is in love, and that yes, it's that airhead housemate he has. How long will they'll be dancing around each other until they finally admit what they feel? Who knows? The cat won't admit it, the girl is clueless.
