Death and Its Companion

She thought of Scotty and Nick. She thought that she would never be teased again for her silly childhood quirks. She missed those days, back when she was small. She would sit out on the stoop of her apartment complex with large law books in her lap. Even in the winter she would bundle up and read about laws and how they applied to everyday life. They drove her thinking. The sent her straight to the academy the day she turned 18. She knew only there is where she could fight the injustices of her neighborhood. Only from a precinct could she comfort the broken and provide peace to the down trotted and misguided.

The water was holding her, wrapping tighter around her body, her neck, and her thoughts. Lily closed her eyes, and thoughts daring her to shut down. The water suddenly grew colder to her already cold body. Her mouth slowly began to slack open and the ice water filed her lungs. The world was blank. She didn't see stars, or a light, or her life. She just saw darkness. She saw black.

Scotty saw the skid marks on the road. He saw the broken side rails and the disturbance in the water. He had an ambulance and back up in route. Scott Valens had the helicopter there before anyone else. He climbed aboard the hovering craft and then was lowered into the cold depths of the lakes. He and he unknown diver aided him in breaking the window. Scotty grabbed his partner and held her as the helicopter began lifting the three up. By the time they were risen the ambulance had arrived as well as Nick and Captain.

The EMTs worked furiously on Lily's cold body. Her pulse was gone and breathing lost. She was gone but Sam begged them to continue working on her until they arrived at the nearest hospital. "Come on Lil, you got make it" Scott begged over and over again.

Upon arrival the docs declare her, Detective Lilith Rush, dead.
