Chapter 1

It was uncommonly cold that year. Winter had set in, and holidays had ridden up. Most students were tucked, safely inside their homes. The white snow littered Hogwarts' grounds, the Christmas trees stood proudly and glowingly inside the castle, and Hagrid's occasional drunken stupor bellowed heart-warming laughter.

James Potter smiled slightly to himself, closing his hazel eyes and breathing in the cold peaceful air. The Head Boy badge glimmered on his chest as he walked down the empty grounds, broomstick swung over his shoulder. It was a joy being relieved of the Head duties, NEWTS studies, and constant drama of school life.

Kicking off the ground, James felt liberation from the reality and pressures. The cold winter air rushed around him, weaving into his messy black hair. A dreamy smile began to etch its way into his features… a look of content washed over his now flushed face.

Yes… James had everything in his life… loyal friends, a great family, excellent grades, and a promising future. All except one thing… Lily Evans… a girl he longed for with his whole being and soul. A girl whom he admired ever since they first exchanged words… and why did he not have her? Why the girl despised him! James never understood why Lily despised him so. He understood the unnecessary hexing (that he fixed) and that was all. It was this that haunted his mind nights upon nights.

Lily Evans yawned, walking towards the Great Hall in search of food. Her dormitory was remarkably silent since every single of her roommates went home that winter. Her emerald almond eyes were wide-awake taking in the scenery before her.

The red head groaned in annoyance as she noticed a certain messy haired boy clambering inside through the huge doors. He was covered in snow and had his broom slung over his shoulder. "Good morning Evans," he said curtly. Lily glared at him and glanced at the broom, "Flying again Potter?" he nodded running a hand through his messy hair. Lily suppressed the urge to roll her eyes and growl; "I suppose when you kick off, it must add to your ego, thus ever increasing your big head." Much to the red head's annoyance, her fellow Head just widened his smile and turned to walk into the Great Hall, "On the contrary Evans, it's quite fulfilling and relaxing… it has nothing to do with big heads."

Lily stood glaring at his back muttering to herself, "Fulfilling and relaxing indeed! Unlikely!" She never knew why she despised Potter so much. He had stopped hexing students, yet she still could not stand him. "Especially that look always etched on his face," she thought. She didn't admit it, but Lily Evans was highly jealous of him. His "perfect" life as she termed it. And that look said it all… it was a look of content that was always washed over his face… and she despised it greatly. And Lily Evans certainly had no 'perfect' life…
