Let Me Keep You Warm

"You were cold," he whispers into the darkness of his office. "You said you were cold."

Emily sighed at the doorway, cursing herself for not keeping her mouth shut.

"Hotch, I -"

He stood up, startling her into silence, and approached her. When he held his arms out to her, she almost fell forward into his embrace. She hadn't let herself admit how much she'd been struggling, but now, with him, she felt like she could let go for a minute and just be.

"I don't want you to ever be cold, Em, not ever," he murmured against her hair, pressing his lips to her head.

"I'm not cold now," she replied quietly.

"No," he agreed, tightening his grip. "I'll keep you warm."

She knows how much keeping her secret affected him, and she feels a familiar wave of guilt wash over her.

"I'll keep you warm," he repeated, comforting himself as much as he was her.

When she eventually pulled back, it was to offer him a tremulous smile. "It's late, I was just coming to say goodnight."

He nodded, gripping her hand in his own. "Come home with me? Let me keep you warm?"

It was with a shaky gasp and a nod that she replied, and she let him lead her from the bullpen by hand, his skin warm against her own.
