No Valentines
By Elton John / Bernie Taupin
The harsh halo of light highlights a hand cut valentine card. A
pen lays nearby, untouched. The light glints off a picture frame,
deserted of a photo. The desk is otherwise empty.
No more Valentines day
No more Christmas cards
I've thrown 'em all away
Duo picks up the pen and twirls it with his fingers. The clock
of the steeple above chimes four times. Duo glances at the curtainless
window, at the faintly lightening sky.
No more sequined stars
No birthday wishes
No more surprises
Who needs 'em anyway
No reason to get excited
Duo looks back at the card and puts pen to paper, thoughts flowing
freely from thought to written symbols. Tears come once again to fuzzy eyes.
Yes, I gave you everything
I gave you earth and sky
and everything in between
That walks or crawls or flies
Duo pauses, memories he'd rather forget washing over him. His other
hand comes up to fiddle with a cross hanging from a silver chain
round his neck. He grips the cross and gives a sharp yank. He continues with his letter.
No Easter mornings
It's your cross now
Keep it all for yourself
It's overrated anyhow
The letter is finished. Now Duo only has to send it. He reaches
for an envelope. It is all ready addressed. There is no return
address. He folds the heart in half and slips it in. He takes
the cross with the broken chain and stuffs that in too. He licks
the sticky gum and seals the envelope.
But keep my valentine
I'll keep my bleeding heart
Just let me out of here
Before that sentimental music starts
Duo pushes back, the wooden legs of the chair scraping the bare
stone beneath his feet. He slips on some shoes and goes from the
church. The morning sky has grown cloudy and a brisk wind whips his braid to and fro.
And your regrets
Fall like empty lines
Like the lies we write on Valentines
The rain starts falling as Duo reaches the country post office.
The man behind the counter smiles as he takes the envelope. Duo
pays and exits the warm room into the rain.
No foggy Sunday rides
No deep embracing kiss
The electricity of storms
Duo reenters the church. People are stirring, up and about now.
But they take no notice of the newest addition. Duo trudges back
to his room and shuts the door. The rain raps down on the windowpanes in a staccato.
The tragedy I almost missed
Festive celebrations
Are non - existant words
And all these anniversaries
Are pointless and absurd
Somewhere, on another planet, Heero rifles through his day's mail.
An envelope with familiar handwriting catches his eyes. He slits
it open and a heart and cross drop to the floor. He bends and picks
up the items, the chain slipping out to coil around his fingers.
He unfolds the heart and reads:
And at the end of this card
My signature is missing
The warm flow that came from my hand
For when the kisses grow cold
The dance means nothing
And Valentines day
Becomes no man's land
The end.
