Disclaimer I own none of the lovely characters created by Queen Rowling.

September the 1st, 1989

It was a day like any other, but for one group of eleven year olds it was the day they were to board the Hogwarts Express to begin their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The train was filled with children chattering, excited to see friends and begin another year as the Hogwarts Express thundered northward, but there was one girl who sat in near silence gazing out the window at the passing scenery. She was excited yes, but not for the same reasons as the students surrounding her. Hogwarts was her chance at a semblance of freedom, an opportunity to do as she wanted instead of what her father demanded. Certainly she would have to behave to suit someone of her standing as her father would say, but that didn't mean she couldn't do what she wanted in the shadows. She had always disagreed with her father, there was no reason purebloods were superior or any of that nonsense, but she certainly could not voice that opinion in present company or at home. After all a pureblooded daughter did not disagree with her father especially in the matters she did. Surrounded as she was by the children of Deatheaters she added only well thought out comments when necessary as she cursed their stupidity in her head, but these were the children she was told to be friends with and so she obeyed if only in appearance. There would be a time to declare her alliances, but this was not it.

At last the train arrived at Hogsmeade Station and a great clamor arose as students disembarked. The girl tossed her long ashy-blonde hair over her shoulder, as she stepped off the train not a curl out of place, she had appearances to keep up after all. She turned as she heard a booming voice call out, "First years! First years over here!" Walking gracefully towards the man she knew to be Hagrid, the groundskeeper of Hogwarts whom her father insisted was a bumbling idiot but she had plans to form her own opinions. She waited with an air of practiced indifference about her as the rest of the first years gathered.

Soon they were gliding across the Black Lake in tiny boats, and the castle appeared magnificently before them. The grey-eyed girl allowed herself a small smile as she thought, I'm finally here.

Entering the castle's grand doors, she took in the splendor surrounding her as Professor McGonagall led them to the Great Hall for the sorting. She made a brief speech about the houses and points before leading them across the grand dais of the Great Hall. The Professor placed a three-legged stool before them and placed the battered Sorting Hat upon it. After its ridiculous song had been sung, McGonagall pulled out a scroll and began to read the first years' names so that they may come up one by one and seal their fates.

Students were sent to each of the four houses and as her name drew closer the girl squashed her nervousness, she had a plan and she would make sure she saw it through. She took a slow breath, as she knew she would be next to step up in front of the school. As she let it out Professor McGonagall announced in a clear voice, "Malfoy, Aurora."

Let me know what you think, I'm hoping for a little inspiration to continue! Constructive criticisms welcome.
