lostmoonchild: Seriously, this is the second fic I've found in my folder that was written before the 12th of May and I'm beginning to wonder if somebody up there was trying to get me to wake the frig up and see something was about to happen. Anyway, I don't own YYH.

A Son's Thought

He couldn't believe she was gone.

Yusuke felt his tears on his face as he stared at his mother's face. Atsuko had died of liver failure, the result of consuming so much alcohol. Even completely managing to stop her alcohol consumption did little to help. BY then, the damage had been done.

The months had passed at Atsuko had grown worse. She had been put on a liver trnsplant list but there was no one who could help. Helplessly, Yusuke could only watch as his mother suffered, slowly dying.

Finally, Atsuko breathed her last breath and passed away. Yusuke felt numb and took care of his mother's funeral arrangements with a grieving heart. Nothing would bring her back. Doing so would only make her suffer again.

Quietly, Yusuke opened a box and saw a bunch of pictures. He didn't know about them until that moment but curiosity got the best of him. Pushing everything to the side, Yusuke began looking at pictures.

He was five years old holding onto his mother's hand as they went school supply shopping with the Yukimura family. Atsuko was surprisingly sober but that was only because Mr. Yukimura told Atsuko to be sober. "Mommy, look! A pony!" Keiko shouted pointing.

"Mommy, look! A pony!" Yusuke mocked in a high pitched voice.

"Quit it, Yusuke!"
"Quit it Yusuke."

Keiko was getting upset, Yusuke could see that. He had known Keiko for two years now since they had met at a local daycare. Next thing Yusuke knew, he was getting into fights for the girl.

"MOM!" Yusuke shouted unhappily five minutes later.

Atsuko laughed as the picture was taken and waited until Yusuke had gotten off the "horse" before asking, "How much?"

Yusuke didn't know that his mother had paid for the picture. He had assumed his mother was trying to make Keiko feel better. Along with the Yukimura's thinking she was actually trying which he admitted she had tried.

The Spirit Detective's eyes softened as he looked at his mother, a teenager in the picture. She already looked to be pregnant and from the look in her eyes, she knew the baby would be all she had and ever would have.

"Yusuke?" A soft voice called.

"In here."

"Trying to find a picture for your mother's funeral?" The voice questioned coming closer as the voice's owner came into the room.

"Yeah."

"Find anything?"

Yusuke looked at his wife and nearly smiled when he saw Keiko's swollen stomach. They were expecting a little girl from what the ultrasound was saying. "Things I never thought I'd find." Yusuke answered.

"Oh, Yusuke."

Yusuke ended up choosing two pictures. The first one being of Atsuko with her newborn son and the second of her as a proud mother on her son's wedding day. Both pictures, he decided, would tell of how Atsuko had done and the story of Atsuko Urameshi, proud mother of a Spirit Detective who had died twice in one lifetime and both times came back from the dead to the family and friends he couldn't leave behind.

lostmoonchild: I don't think you really see anything much dealing with Yusuke's thoughts on his mother (there were hardly any stories about Atsuko last I checked) so I thought this would be kind of fun to write. So read and review, flames are accepted.
